Punishments for racism a farce: Rose

Punishments for racism a farce: Rose
LONDON • Tottenham defender Danny Rose is counting the days until he can retire and no longer has to suffer racist taunts.
In his first public interview since being the subject of vitriolic taunts during England's 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifier victory at Montenegro on March 25, he also called the punishments meted out to offending nations "a farce".
Declaring he was "over the moon" upon hearing of manager Mauricio Pochettino's plans to lead his players off the pitch if he encounters any racist chanting, he said: "Yes, I've had enough.
"At the minute, how I programme myself (is that) I've got five or six more years left in football and I just can't wait to see the back of it.
"Seeing how things are done in the game at the minute, it's just whatever, isn't it? I want to get out of it. That's how I feel...
"There's so much politics and whatever in football and I can't wait to see the back of it."
Player response to racism at games has come under increased scrutiny after the monkey-chanting heard just before the final whistle in Podgorica, and his response will undoubtedly encourage other players to question if enough is being done to deter racism.
England teammate Raheem Sterling, who also copped plenty of abuse that night, has suggested that black players have endured as much as they can take, something which Rose agrees with.
The 28-year-old has endured more than most. While playing for the England Under-21 team in Serbia in 2012, he was taunted with monkey chants and accused of being vulgar by the Football Association of Serbia when, in response, he mimicked the supporters.
Rose, who was sent off after the final whistle for showing his frustration, added: "I played in Serbia years ago and it happened there.
"So I sort of thought it would be a possibility that it might happen again, and it did. I looked up in the first half and I know the exact time it happened.
"It didn't affect my game. I'm a big boy and I know that three points are not the most important thing when you're going through something like that.
"But I wanted the team to get three points, so that we could get out of Montenegro...
"But, when countries get fined what I'd probably spend on a night out in London, what do you expect?"

Football: Buchanan goal hands Canada slender 1-0 win over Cameroon in women's World Cup

MONTPELLIER, FRANCE (REUTERS) - Defender Kadeisha Buchanan scored on the stroke of halftime to hand Canada a winning start to the women's World Cup as they edged Cameroon 1-0 at a rainy Stade de La Mosson on Monday (June 10).
Buchanan came storming in at a corner and delivered a textbook header to break the deadlock.
Yet it was an unconvincing performance from Canada, who are fifth in the FIFA women's rankings and were quarter-finalists at the last World Cup.
Despite all their possession and passing, Canada managed just three efforts on target as they battled to get the better of the African's defence.
Canada's veteran captain Christine Sinclair could only muster several half chances in her bid to become the first player to score at five different women's World Cups.
Nichelle Prince hit the outside of the post just before Buchanan's goal and then also put a close-in effort wide on the hour mark.
But Canada almost paid a price for failing to add to the goal when Claudine Meffometou went just wide from a 70th minute corner in the only real effort of the night for Cameroon.

Football: Babel strike leaves Cardiff on brink of relegation

LONDON (REUTERS) - Ryan Babel struck a potentially deadly blow to Cardiff City's Premier League survival chances with a stunning 25-yard strike that secured Fulham a deserved 1-0 win at Craven Cottage on Saturday (April 27).
The defeat left Cardiff three points adrift of Brighton & Hove Albion, who play Newcastle United later on Saturday, and means they are likely to join Fulham in the Championship next season.
The win means Fulham equalled their own Premier League record of three successive wins as Dutchman Babel struck a fierce first-time shot 11 minutes from time to register his sixth goal of the season.
But Fulham had to withstand a ferocious Cardiff rearguard action in the final few minutes, with Bobby Reid hitting the bar and keeper Sergio Rico pulling off a series of outstanding saves.
The game was delayed for seven minutes in the first half after Fulham's Denis Odoi was accidentally kicked in the face by team mate Maxine Le Marchand.
The defender was knocked out cold and had to be revived with oxygen before being carried off to a standing ovation.
After a lacklustre first half, Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic blazed a wonderful chance just over from 12 yards as Fulham looked to capitalise on their recent good form under caretaker manager Scott Parker.
"Babel's goal was special," he said.
"He has come up with a fantastic strike and won us the game.
"Massive positive for Sergio Rico, he stood up and so did the back four. It has been a tough year, we have conceded a lot of goals but three clean sheets is massive."
Parker confirmed that Odoi was recovering from his injury.
"He was out of it for a few seconds which was concerning, but he is fine and will be OK," the former midfielder added.
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock, who has never won a league game at Craven Cottage in 11 attempts, suggested his side would not have scored "had we carried on till Christmas."
He said: "The luck has been against us. On reflection my team selection was wrong, but you can't fault the lads."

Sterling gets van Dijk's vote for PFA award

Sterling gets van Dijk's vote for PFA award
LONDON • Virgil van Dijk has voted for Raheem Sterling, one of his biggest rivals for the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year award, to win this season's prize in recognition of his improvement at Manchester City.
The Liverpool defender is among the favourites to land the accolade following an outstanding campaign for the Premier League leaders but believes that several City players should be in the running.
Van Dijk ultimately opted for the former Liverpool forward, likely his closest challenger for the honour, with voting rules preventing players backing their teammates.
Sterling, who is believed to have voted for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, has 15 goals and nine assists for Pep Guardiola's team this season as they attempt to retain the league title at Liverpool's expense.
The Netherlands captain said: "I voted for Raheem Sterling. I did what I thought and he deserves it. He's had a fantastic season.
"I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well and another couple of players from Manchester City.
"But I am just being honest. He has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it."
The 27-year-old also reiterated his focus was on silverware with Jurgen Klopp's team and not individual awards.
He added: "Of course, you're going to be proud (to be in the running for the award), but all the hard work in the training ground is something we all did together.
"It is to win something as a team, a collective thing as a club. Hopefully, that is something that will happen."
Sterling has earned his peers' respect and their votes not only because of his on-pitch exploits but also off it, as an increasingly prominent campaigner against racism in football.
On Monday, the England international issued a defiant message to racists that he was "proud to be black".
Declaring he would rather stay on the field and punish the opposition in the face of racist abuse than be part of an orchestrated walk-off, he added: "My mum has taught me how to love myself, how to love my skin colour and how to be comfortable in my skin colour.
"I wouldn't personally agree with it (leaving the field). I would rather go and win the game because that would hurt them even more.
"They're trying to get you down. If you do walk off as a group, then they win. If you score a goal to win the match, that's an even better feeling, which beats them."
However, the 24-year-old played down his impact as a spokesman on how racism is a blight on the game, saying he "did not really think he can make a difference as this is something that has been happening before I was born".

Football: Sala remembered as Cardiff make painful return to action

LONDON (AFP) - A minute's silence was held before Cardiff's first match on Tuesday (Jan 29) since the plane carrying the club's record signing Emiliano Sala disappeared over the Channel Islands over a week ago.
After completing a £15 million (S$26 million) move from Nantes on Jan 19, Sala was on his way from France to take part in his first training session with Cardiff two days later when the aircraft carrying the Argentine and pilot David Ibbotson lost contact.
Visiting Cardiff fans at Arsenal's Emirates stadium unveiled a banner reading: "We never saw you play and never saw you score but Emiliano our beautiful bluebird we will love you forever more."
The captains of both sides laid a bouquet of flowers on the pitch before kick-off, while Argentina shirts and flags were waved among the visiting support.
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock described the past week as the toughest of his career having helped broker the deal that brought Sala to the club.
"I've been in football management for 40 years and it's been by far the most difficult week in my career, by an absolute mile," said Warnock on Monday.
"It's been a traumatic week and even now I can't get my head around the situation. It's probably hit me harder than anyone else as I've met the lad and talked to him for the last six to eight weeks."

Guernsey police suspended the official search for the plane on Thursday, but a privately-funded search has continued.
Top players were among the more than 4,500 contributors to a crowdfunding page which has raised over €360,000 (S$550,000) to look for Ibbotson and Sala.
In Arsenal's match programme, Gunners club captain Laurent Koscielny compared the game to his experience of representing France against England in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks in 2015.
"It is hard to get into the game at times. You have to be professional, but you also feel the emotion, the sadness around you," said Koscielny.
"There are things far more important than football and you don't know what tomorrow will bring. I am very happy that the searches are now continuing."

Football: Hazard set for 'false nine' role again for striker-less Chelsea

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is contemplating deploying Eden Hazard as a "false nine" for a third straight Premier League game to set him "free".
The Blues, fourth in the Premier League, play Leicester on Saturday (Dec 22), after beating champions Manchester City and then Brighton without fielding a recognised striker in the starting line-up.
Olivier Giroud played the full game as Chelsea beat Bournemouth in the League Cup on Wednesday, when Hazard came off the bench to score the decisive goal. Alvaro Morata returned to training on Thursday following a knee injury.
"There isn't the best position for Hazard," Sarri said on Friday.
"Hazard is a wonderful player, with a very high level of imagination. He needs to be let free on the pitch.
"I think there isn't the right position for him. We need to have a very high level of organisation based on his movements."
Sarri's assistant boss Gianfranco Zola on Tuesday admitted Chelsea were admirers of striker Callum Wilson, but Sarri said he is keen not to upset Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.
"I don't know about Wilson, because, as you know Eddie is a friend and I want to see him very happy," Sarri said.
Danny Drinkwater's future at Stamford Bridge looks bleak after Sarri cast doubt over his future.
The former Leicester midfielder has played just 30 minutes so far this season - in August's Community Shield defeat to Manchester City.
"He's suitable for a midfield with two midfielders," said Sarri.
"With three he is not really a central midfielder, he's not suitable to play centre right or centre left. For him, the problem is only my football."
Asked if Drinkwater, 28, has a future at Chelsea, Sarri said: "I don't know. It depends on the club. It's up to him, I think."
Defender Andreas Christensen has a minor hamstring injury that could keep him out until January.

There had been heckles from the home support as the players went into the interval with the hosts fortunate still to be level, all the festering doubts over Maurizio Sarri's stewardship exposed yet again, only for those jeers to be choked within the opening few minutes of the restart by a taunting of Tottenham.
Maurizio Sarri's team ended the afternoon in third place, having leapfrogged Spurs, and one win from Champions League qualification.
The doubts will resurface while the Blues' displays veer from the sublime to the ridiculous so regularly, but Chelsea are still likely to achieve their objective of a return to Europe's elite competition.
Watford, such a dominant force through a one-sided opening period, were dismissed in those frantic exchanges at the start of the second half with a difficult occasion suddenly transformed into something of a breeze.
Sarri even threw on Gary Cahill for a first appearance since November for the final few minutes, granting the club captain the send-off he deserves.
That helped ensure the post-match lap of appreciation was conducted in a more celebratory mood than what had seemed unlikely when Watford were running rings round the home side.
For once, Sarri's half-time team talk had instigated an immediate upturn with Eden Hazard, previously peripheral, revived and Ruben Loftus-Cheek injecting urgency to Chelsea's approach.
The England midfielder had headed the hosts ahead, reaching Hazard's gloriously clipped cross to power his effort beyond Ben Foster. Within minutes, David Luiz sprinted late into the box to meet Hazard's corner and effectively complete the victory. Even Gonzalo Higuain, so desperately ponderous in his play up to the interval, chipped in an exquisite third.
Higuain, Olivier Giroud and Pedro might have added further plunder as a side who had initially appeared so deflated tore into the FA Cup finalists with relish.
There is no fathoming Chelsea's form at present. They are wildly unpredictable but, according to the Premier League table, the third best team in the country at present.

Hougang United club employee on CBT charge

Hougang United club employee on CBT charge

A female employee from Singapore Premier League (SPL) club Hougang United has been arrested and charged in court for having allegedly misappropriated $278,200 from their clubhouse operations.
Admin assistant Tean Tai Tee, a 24-year-old Malaysian, was charged in court on Dec 16 last year with one count of criminal breach of trust (CBT) by a clerk or servant.
She is said to have committed the offence between Nov 29 and Dec 11.
Tean's bail was set at $100,000 and she is due back in court on March 12. If convicted, she can be jailed for up to 15 years, and fined.
Hougang confirmed with The Straits Times a police report was made on the day of the incident, but declined further comment.
A Football Association of Singapore spokesman said: "The FAS is aware of this matter, and had raised various inquiries with the club.
"A police report had been made, and the police have also arrested a club staff in connection with this matter. As the matter is currently under police investigation, we will not be able to comment further."
Currently, six of nine Singapore Premier League clubs - Hougang, Albirex Niigata, Balestier Khalsa, Geylang International, Home United and Warriors FC - run jackpot-machine operations at their respective clubhouses.
Depending on the size of their clubhouse operations, they typically hold a few hundred thousand dollars in cash for winner payouts.
In recent years, the Government has tightened the guidelines on operators of jackpot machines.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in 2017, seven clubs that did not meet the criteria to operate fruit machines were given six-month interim permits to wind down their jackpot operations by the end of April last year.
These included former S-League (now rebranded as Singapore Premier League) clubs Gombak United and Tanjong Pagar United.
SPL clubs have had to abide by new rules that include shorter opening hours and stricter membership regulation. From last December, they also had to remove some machines from their clubhouses, as part of the MHA's move to further reduce the number of such machines in the country.
The first reduction took place last November and clubs can have up to 15 machines by this November.

Football: Arsenal beat toothless Chelsea to blow Champions League chase open

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal blew the race for a top-four Premier League finish wide open as first-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny saw the Gunners beat Chelsea 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday (Jan 19).
Chelsea remain in pole position for a return to Champions League football next season in fourth, but are now just three points ahead of Arsenal and a surging Manchester United, who beat Brighton earlier on Saturday to stretch caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's winning streak to seven games in all competitions.
Maurizio Sarri's men risk being caught after a fourth defeat in 11 league matches that underlined the need for a striker, as the club close in on signing Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus.
Sarri again opted to start without a recognised centre-forward, with a largely anonymous Eden Hazard preferred in middle of a front three against an Arsenal defence that had kept just one Premier League clean sheet since September.
By contrast Arsenal boss Unai Emery's selection was vindicated, with Mesut Ozil on the bench for the whole match and a switch to a 4-4-2 that allowed Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to form a potent partnership up front.
Aubameyang should have opened the scoring after just five minutes when perfectly picked out by Lacazette's low cross, but he dragged his shot wide.
Kepa Arrizabalaga then produced a brilliant save to deny Koscielny from point-blank range, but it counted for little as from the resulting 14th-minute corner Arsenal took a deserved lead.

Lacazette did well to stay on his feet as he skipped past Marcos Alonso and Pedro Rodriguez before smashing the ball past Kepa at his near post.
Aubameyang should have doubled Arsenal's lead moments later but fired too close to Kepa when clean through.
Chelsea's start was horribly reminiscent of the 3-1 defeat at Tottenham in November that began their dip in form after a fine start to Sarri's reign at Stamford Bridge.
However, Arsenal's defence remained vulnerable when put under pressure and Pedro could have levelled when his lob over Bernd Leno shaved the outside of the post.
Aubameyang came close again, this time in spectacular fashion with an overhead kick that flew inches wide with Kepa beaten.
Chelsea were repeatedly caught out by Arsenal's well-worked set-pieces and paid for it again, albeit in fortunate fashion for the Gunners, six minutes before the break.
Sead Kolasinac headed down Lucas Torreira's free-kick into the path of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and his cross picked out the unmarked Koscielny.
The Arsenal captain mistimed his header, but the ball bounced in off his shoulder for his first goal since he ruptured his Achilles in April.
Chelsea could have got a foothold in the game before half-time as David Luiz's header came back off the post.
But in keeping with so many of their performances of late, Chelsea created little thereafter despite dominating possession.
Olivier Giroud was given a warm welcome back to the Emirates when he entered as a substitute, but even with the French international as a focal point, the visitors were toothless.
Sarri will hope Higuain, who scored 38 goals when the pair first worked together at Napoli in the 2015/16 season, is the answer.

Alisson the 'lifesaver'

Alisson the 'lifesaver'

LONDON • Jaws dropped when Liverpool splashed out £65 million (S$111.8 million) for goalkeeper Alisson Becker in July.
Critics said the hefty investment went against the conventional wisdom; this was the kind of money clubs were supposed to invest in goalscorers, not goalkeepers.
If keeping 10 clean sheets in 16 English Premier League matches this season is not proof of his calibre, then the Brazilian's crucial stoppage-time save against Napoli in the do-or-die Champions League Group C clash on Tuesday would surely have vindicated Jurgen Klopp's unwavering faith in him.
Mohamed Salah's fine first-half strike had put Liverpool on course for the 1-0 win required to pip the Italian team to second place behind group winners Paris Saint-Germain on goals scored.
Last season's finalists faced elimination, however, when Napoli's Arkadiusz Milik had a glorious chance to equalise in the 92nd minute, only for Alisson to block at point-blank range and send Liverpool through to the last 16.
That reflex save was worth almost £11 million to Liverpool, in terms of money for the victory and qualification, and Klopp said afterwards that he would have paid double for his "lifesaver".
"If I knew Alisson was this good, I would have paid double," the Liverpool boss said of the 26-year-old.
"It was not only one save. He had a lot of things to do tonight. How cool and calm he was with the ball helps us a lot in our build-up.

GIANT OF A GOALKEEPER
It was not only one save. He had a lot of things to do tonight. How cool and calm he was with the ball helps us a lot in our build-up. When he comes out for crosses, he is outstanding. And, yes, that save was just incredible.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, on his goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

"When he comes out for crosses, he is outstanding. And, yes, that save was just incredible.
"But, if we don't defend the whole pitch like we defended, Ali cannot make 20 saves like the last one.
"He did it: incredible, unbelievable. I never saw something similar. But still he needs the other boys around him. I couldn't be more proud of all the people involved."
Klopp also claimed Liverpool's all-round display was worthy of a place in the knockout stages for the second successive season.
"The game was outstanding, unbelievable," the German added.
"The boys played with their whole hearts on the pitch. Our offensive defending, our offensive pressing was some of the best I've ever seen.
"The intensity we played with was just difficult to deal with. Yes, we could have scored more, but 2-0 doesn't help a lot.
"The goal Mo scored. What a goal, unbelievable. And the save Ali made, I have no words for that.
"That was, of course, a lifesaver. I'm really proud tonight."
Kalidou Koulibaly admitted that Napoli paid the price for paying too much respect to Liverpool.
The Senegal defender told Sky Sport: "Maybe, unconsciously, we feared Liverpool because we know they are very strong and that it's not easy to play against them."
Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti was proud of his side's effort but insisted that Virgil van Dijk should have received a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Dries Mertens in the first half.
Instead, the Dutchman received only a yellow card, which will rule him out of the first leg of the last-16 tie in February.
"From the video, it is a red card," said the Italian. "There are a lot of questions about VAR (Video Assistant Referee) but, when VAR comes into the Champions League, it will be too late."
Liverpool will find out their last-16 opponents when the draw is made on Monday and van Dijk said on current form, few sides will fancy drawing them.
"I don't think so. That's what we showed last season and this season as well," he said. "We'll see what's going to happen."

Football: Super-sub Gray sends Watford into FA Cup semis

LONDON (AFP) - Andre Gray came off the bench to fire Watford into the FA Cup semi-finals with the late winner in their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday (March 16).
Javi Gracia's side took the lead through Etienne Capoue's first half strike before Michy Batshuayi equalised for Palace after the interval.
That was the signal for Gracia to turn to Gray, who maintained his reputation as Watford's super-sub by grabbing the goal that avenged the Hornets' 2016 FA Cup semi-final defeat against Palace.
The former Burnley striker has now scored the winner as a substitute three times in recent weeks, having also netted Watford's decisive goal against Everton and Leicester.
Gray's latest heroics moved Watford closer to finally returning to the FA Cup final 35 years after they lost to Everton in their only other appearance.
"Obviously every player is disappointed if they don't start. There's two ways of going about it, you either sit there and sulk or you get on with it," Gray said.
"I've been on the bench quite a lot this season so I've got my mind round it now. I just have to come on and make a difference."
Gracia added: "When Andre Gray is on the pitch he is scoring a lot of important goals for us.
"To be able to enjoy a semi final at Wembley will be amazing."
Watford had won both Premier League meetings with Palace this season and Gracia's team went close early on when Gerard Deulofeu's strike drew a good stop from Vicente Guaita.

FATAL CONSEQUENCES

Despite that save, Guaita looked nervous on a windy afternoon and the Spanish keeper made a hash of dealing with a Watford corner before Palace managed to clear.
It was a mistake he repeated with fatal consequences as Watford took the lead in the 27th minute.
Flapping at a Jose Holebas corner, Guaita's weak punch failed to clear the danger and when the ball was diverted back to Capoue, the French midfielder slotted into the empty net from close-range.
Watford threatened a second goal when Deulofeu unleashed a rising shot moments later, but this time Guaita was up to the task.
Palace had laboured without Ivory Coast forward Wilfried Zaha, absent due to a calf strain, but they were more vibrant after the break and Heurelho Gomes had to keep out Max Meyer's diving header before Batshuayi fired just wide.
The visitors' pressure was rewarded in the 62nd minute when Gomes a risky pass to Adrian Mariappa.
Mariappa was far too slow to clear and on-loan Chelsea striker Batshuayi stole possession, advancing into the penalty area to drill a cool finish past Gomes.
Gracia responded by sending on Gray in the 77th minute and it proved an inspired move as he won it for Watford just two minutes after his introduction.
Roberto Pereyra was the catalyst with an incisive burst from midfield and the Argentine's perfectly-placed pass picked out Gray, who timed his run to poke a volley past Guaita from eight yards.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka should have forced extra-time when the ball fell to him after a Gomes mistake in stoppage-time, but the Palace defender blasted just wide.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Premier League leaders Manchester City recovered from two goals down to beat Championship side Swansea City 3-2 at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday (March 16) and progress to the FA Cup semi-finals.
Having secured a last-eight spot in the Champions League to go with their League Cup title, City made a strong start as they looked to continue their quest to become the first side to win all four major trophies in an English season.
However, they were opened up after 20 minutes by Connor Roberts who drew a foul from Fabian Delph in the penalty area and Matt Grimes converted from the spot to give Swansea the lead.
Nine minutes later it was two as former Manchester City youth player Bersant Celina finished off a flowing Swansea move to stun his former employers.
The Premier League side struggled to break Swansea down after the break, but Bernardo Silva's goal in the 68th minute got the visitors back in the match.
From then on in it was all Manchester City and an own goal off the back of Swansea goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt after substitute Sergio Aguero's 77th-minute penalty had hit the post levelled the tie.
Aguero missed a glorious chance to score but the Argentine striker had the final say when he headed the winner two minutes from time from what looked an offside position.
"We spoke at halftime that we need one goal and after we score one goal the rest will be easier," City manager Pep Guardiola said.
"But the spirit and persistence helped us to win the game."
Guardiola named a strong side for the trip to Wales, but left leading goalscorers Raheem Sterling and Aguero on the bench.
City still had plenty of firepower on the pitch but Swansea stood firm in the early stages and after Roberts was upended in the box Grimes stroked home his penalty with aplomb.
Swansea then carved City open with a slick passing move and it was superbly finished off by Celina.
"We try to play that way," Swansea manager Graham Potter said of the second goal.
"I said before the game if you do be yourself you might just get a miracle."
After Bernardo Silva's superb finish with the outside of the boot got his side a foothold in the match, Aguero was presented with the perfect chance to draw City level after Sterling had been felled in the penalty area. City knew their luck was in after Aguero's spot-kick went in off the back of Nordfeldt but the keeper then brilliantly denied Aguero from close range.
Aguero had the last laugh, however, when he headed his 28th goal of the season in all competitions, although he appeared to be offside and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was not being used in the match to the dismay of the Swansea fans.
"All around Europe there is VAR," Guardiola said.
"Here there is not. I don't like to win in that way. I am sorry."

Final-day hurrahs

Final-day hurrahs
When Manchester City and Liverpool take to the field on the final day of the season tomorrow, it will be the eighth time in the Premier League era that the race for the title has gone down to the wire.
This season is also remarkable for the quality of the two contenders, with City and Liverpool on course to record the third-and fourth-best top-flight campaigns respectively since the league was formed in 1888 (behind Preston North End in 1888-89 and City last year).
City can secure back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in their history with a win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
But, if Pep Guardiola's men drop points and Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, the Merseyside club will secure their first league title since 1990.

Football: Five games that won Manchester City the Premier League title

BRIGHTON (AFP) - Manchester City held off a record-breaking challenge from Liverpool to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League title with a 4-1 victory over Brighton on Sunday (May 12).
AFP Sports looks at five games that helped Pep Guardiola's men edge out Liverpool out by a solitary point.

Manchester City 2 Liverpool 1:

A shock run of three defeats in four Premier League games in December saw City fall seven points behind Liverpool ahead of their New Year showdown at the Etihad.
Guardiola conceded the title would be over if his side lost and the game was delicately poised after Roberto Firmino cancelled out Sergio Aguero's opener.
Leroy Sane had surprisingly found himself sidelined for much of the campaign, but the German arguably scored the biggest goal of City's season to inflict Liverpool's only defeat in the league 18 minutes from time.

Manchester City 6 Chelsea 0:

City's fourth and final defeat of the season at Newcastle handed Liverpool the chance to reopen a seven-point lead, but instead they stumbled in draws with Leicester and West Ham.
The defending champions pounced with three victories in a week to go back on top, the pick of which inflicted Chelsea's worst-ever Premier League defeat.

Aguero scored a hat-trick, Raheem Sterling twice and Ilkay Gundogan was also on target in City's most complete performance of the campaign.

Manchester City 1 Tottenham 0:

Despite their domestic dominance, Champions League glory still eludes City after exiting in dramatic

fashion on away goals to Tottenham.
City were denied a last-gasp winning goal in their quarter-final tie by a VAR review, but raised themselves to exact a measure of revenge three days later.
Phil Foden's early header was the only goal, but City had to rely on goalkeeper Ederson to make a string of saves to prevent a potentially calamitous result.

Manchester United 0 Manchester City 2:

A Manchester derby was seen as the last major hurdle for City to clear four games from the finishing line.
However, unlike when Liverpool were held 0-0 at Old Trafford in late February, when United were on a high in the early stages of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign, City travelled across Manchester at the right time.
United succumbed to a seventh defeat in nine games as Bernardo Silva and Sane struck in 12 second-half minutes to paint the city blue.

Manchester City 1 Leicester 0:

City ended the season on a run of 14 straight Premier League wins that became progressively more nerve-wracking as the finish line approached.
Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers threatened to do his old side a huge favour in the penultimate game of the season as his Leicester side frustrated City and had their chances to inflict a knockout blow at the Etihad.
However, captain Vincent Kompany stepped up 20 minutes from time to win the game in the most unlikely of circumstances by smashing the ball into the top corner for his first goal from outside the box in 12 years.

Football: Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Arsenal's Vivianne Miedema win PFA Player of the Year awards

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk was named as England's PFA Player of the Year for 2019 on Sunday (April 28).
Van Dijk succeeded Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah in winning the award, voted for by his fellow players and saw off competition from Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling.
But Sterling, 24, was named the Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year, following on from City colleague Leroy Sane.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75 million (S$132 million) in January 2018.
The 27-year-old Dutchman has been an ever-present for Liverpool in their bid to dethrone City as Premier League champions this season, with Sterling's side one point clear of the Reds at the top of the table with just two games left to play.
Van Dijk has starred in a hugely improved Liverpool defence that has kept 20 clean sheets and conceded a mere 20 goals in the current campaign.
"It's pretty difficult to put into words," said Van Dijk, the first defender to win the award since Chelsea's John Terry 14 years ago.
"I think it's the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted player of the year by the players you play against every week. It's special. I'm very proud and honoured to receive it."
Van Dijk, who also has a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona to look forward to this week, added: "If you see the standard of strikers or playmakers we have in the league, it's unbelievable."
England international Sterling has been praised both for his on-field performances and a willingness to speak out about football's continuing problems with racism.
Arsenal Women forward Vivianne Miedema won the Women's Player of the Year award after scoring 22 times to lead the Gunners to their first title since 2012, with her and Van Dijk completing a Dutch double.
The north London side were crowned champions with a 4-0 win away to Brighton on Sunday.
Miedema was also nominated for the Young Player of the Year award won by Manchester City forward Georgia Stanway.
Miedema said: "I'm obviously really proud to represent my team here. I think we've had an amazing year, especially with winning the league today."
Meanwhile, the PFA's special achievement award went to Manchester City and England captain Steph Houghton. The 31-year-old defender is set to skipper the Lionesses at this year's World Cup in France.
But Houghton has said she could miss the tournament in order to care for her husband, former Liverpool midfielder Stephen Darby, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year.
Darby, however, is determined Houghton takes her place in manager Phil Neville's squad.
