Pulisic aims to be next Hazard

LONDON • Christian Pulisic has said that he wants to make the same impact that Eden Hazard has had at Chelsea and hopes to play alongside the Belgium superstar at Stamford Bridge.
The US international signed a 5½-year contract with Maurizio Sarri's team in January but was immediately loaned backed to Germany to finish the season at Borussia Dortmund.
"It is incredible to see what Eden can do," attacking midfielder Pulisic, 20, told the BBC. "He (Hazard) is a guy to look up to and what I would love to become.
"It is definitely a goal. Any player would be dumb not to want to be in the same team as him."
But the £58 million (S$101.2 million) signing appears unlikely to get his wish, with the Chelsea star linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The Belgian forward said earlier this month that he has made a decision on his future. Any announcement of a deal with Real, however, is likely to be delayed until the conclusion of the Europa League final against Arsenal next Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Pulisic, who scored four times in 20 league appearances last season as Dortmund finished second to Bayern Munich, said he wanted to inspire young American footballers.

YOUNG GUN
I don't want to be looked at as someone who is the youngest to do this or that. I just want to be an established player and someone people respect, who is successful in this league.
CHRISTIAN PULISIC, Chelsea's new signing, who is both the youngest player to captain the US and score for them in a World Cup qualifier.

"I don't want to be looked at as someone who is the youngest to do this or that," said Pulisic, who is both the youngest player to captain the United States and to score for them in a World Cup qualifier.
"I just want to be an established player and someone people respect, who is successful in this league. It is completely new to me and something not a lot of American players have experienced."
Pulisic spent part of his childhood in England and relished the football culture.
"I soon realised how much people over here loved the game. To be in that culture and get thrown right in just grew my passion even more," he said.
"Every day after school I was on the court playing. I would go to games with my dad, including one at Chelsea. I don't remember how old I was but it would have been around the time Jose Mourinho was there.
"The fans were screaming and yelling. The atmosphere was fantastic. I had never seen anything like it."
Pulisic would likely have seen Petr Cech in action then and it was reported on Tuesday that the goalkeeper will return to the Blues as sporting director when he retires from playing after the Europa League final, according to Sky Sports and other British media.
The 37-year-old Arsenal goalkeeper responded to the reports by tweeting: "Despite the news today as I had already said to everybody before, I'll make (a) decision about my future after the last game. Now my sole focus is to win the EL with @Arsenal."
Chelsea were not immediately available to comment on the media reports.
Former Czech Republic international Cech, who won 124 caps, spent 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League and Europa League, four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups before moving to the Gunners in 2015.
He had previously announced that he would retire from playing at the end of this season.

Football: Tampines Rovers sneak past Yangon United 4-3 to top AFC Cup Group F

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers needed a three-goal salvo in the dying minutes in their last AFC Cup Group F match against Cambodia's Nagaworld FC to secure a 4-2 victory.
On Wednesday night (May 1), the Singapore Premier League side endured another "crazy" AFC Cup game as they lost the lead twice but still ended up beating Yangon United 4-3 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Stags striker Khairul Amri missed a host of chances but went home with the match ball after notching a hat-trick in the second, 43rd and 77th minute.
But even his hat-trick was not enough to seal the win as Yangon capitalised on sloppy defending to come back from 2-0 and 3-2 down in an end-to-end second half with goals from Soe Min Naing (58th), Maung Maung Lwin (71st) and Kyaw Zin Oo (85th).
The visitors, clearly fired up by a sizeable Myanmarese contingent among the 1,827 fans, could have even snuck ahead in the 87th minute, but Tampines goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari did well to deny Kosuke Yamazaki.
That allowed Tampines full-back Irwan Shah to steal the show and three points in the 91st minute as he latched onto Madhu Mohana's flick-on to lash past Wai Lin Aung for his fourth goal of the season.
With four wins and a draw, Tampines lead Group F with 13 points and need a draw at Ha Noi on May 15 to be sure of making the Asean Zonal semi-finals.
They may also qualify as the best runners-up from the three Asean groups, but Tampines coach Kadir Yahaya wants his team to improve on their defending if they are to go far in the competition.
He said: "Like the last game against Nagaworld, after we scored the first goal, we dropped a gear.
"Maybe that was due to confidence, but we kept trying and had chances to kill off the game which we didn't make full use of.
"We entertained the fans but, from a coach's perspective, we made individual errors that we need to correct in order to go further.
"We have been conceding in the last five to 10 minutes, which is quite worrying. If we played a stronger team today, they would have killed us."
Amri also felt the need to improve at the other end, saying added: "It was a crazy game. i missed a lot of chances and let my team down and they had to fight until the final whistle.
"I'm happy to contribute three goals, but it was almost not enough and I should have scored four or five. We will need to be sharper in the upcoming games."

Tampines Rovers FC started the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup with a double win playing Global in the quarterfinals. Global had an unbeaten score in the whole of 2016 season. Football: A timeline of the Ben Davis saga

Football: A timeline of the Ben Davis saga

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) confirmed on Monday (Feb 18) that footballer Ben Davis has defaulted on his national service commitments.
It is understood that the 18-year-old, who is on professional terms with English Premier League club Fulham, was required to enlist on Feb 14.
Davis, born to a Thai mother and English father, moved to Singapore with his family at age five and became a citizen four years later.
Here's a look at his progress in football over the years.
January 2013: Davis joins the Singapore Sports School.
Before that, he had been a part of the Football Association of Singapore's (FAS) Junior Centre of Excellence team since he was eight. He also honed his skills at the JSSL soccer school run by his father, Harvey Davis.
September 2015: Features for the national Under-16 team in the AFC Under-16 qualifiers. Singapore fail to qualify for the finals after finishing third in a group comprising North Korea, Thailand and Cambodia.

November 2015: Nominated for The New Paper Dollah Kassim award which recognises Singapore's football talents aged 18 and below who have displayed football excellence and strong character.
He was described by then-U-15 coach V Selveraj as an "intelligent young footballer... (who) holds the ball up well and passes well under pressure, which many boys his age cannot."
November 2016: Leaves Singapore to move to London to study at the Harrow High School, a sports college, in hopes of earning a scholarship with Fulham.
July 2017: Signs a two-year scholarship with Fulham, becoming the first Singaporean to sign for an English club since Daniel Bennett played for third-tier team Wrexham in 2003.
November 2017: Returns to Singapore and features for the national Under-19 team in the AFC Under-19 qualifiers. Singapore fail to qualify for the finals after finishing bottom in a group that includes Japan, Thailand and Mongolia.
July 2018: Signs professional terms with Fulham.
The length of the contract and his wages were not revealed, but academy players who sign professional contracts in England receive, on average, between £300 (S$540) and £1,500 a week, depending on the club's valuation of their potential.
A day after his signing was announced, Mindef revealed that his application for long-term NS deferment had been rejected.
August 2018: In Parliament, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen gave three reasons why Mindef rejected Davis' application.
The first was that he was playing as an English national - as listed on Fulham's website.
The second was that his father had "consistently refused to indicate" when his son would return to do NS, if deferred. The senior Davis said this was because there are "a lot of variables all dependent on his development and progression".
Thirdly, Mindef said the senior Davis indicated that Ben would still sign the contract with Fulham if deferment was not granted - as he did - and would consider the option for his son to renounce his Singapore citizenship in order to pursue his career.
February 2019: Mindef confirms Davis has defaulted on his national service commitments, after failing to report for NS as required. It added that he is also staying overseas without a valid Exit Permit. As a result, he is liable upon conviction to a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to three years.

Football: Zidane praise for Man United's Pogba opens door to Real bid

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane opened the door to a possible bid for Paul Pogba on Saturday (March 30) when he hailed the Manchester United star as "a player who knows how to do everything".
The French World Cup winner has thrived under new United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but has made no secret of his admiration for Real.
"It's one of the biggest clubs in the world. I've always said Real Madrid is a dream club for every player," the midfielder said last week.
Zidane is a self-confessed Pogba fan, the Real boss telling a press conference: "I really like the player, that's nothing new.
"I know him personally... He's a really different player, somebody who brings something few others can to the pitch.
"He's capable of doing everything. There are midfielders who know how to defend really well, others who are very good in attack. He knows how to do everything."
Zidane, who returned as Real manager after replacing Santiago Solari, added: "One day, if he has the chance to do something else after Manchester United, he's always said that Madrid was a club that interested him a lot."

Pogba, 26, moved from Juventus to United for €105 million in 2016 with his contract terminating in 2021.
Spanish media suggest Real will go on a massive recruitment drive this summer with a war chest of up to €500 million (S$760 million).

Football: Real Madrid agree fee for Chelsea's Hazard, say reports

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea forward Eden Hazard is set to join Real Madrid after a deal worth €100 million (S$150 million) plus add-ons was agreed between the two clubs on Thursday, British and Spanish media reported.
There was no official word from Madrid or London.
Spain's AS sports daily, citing unnamed sources, said on its website that the Premier League side had accepted Real's offer for the 28-year-old.
It said Hazard, who is training with Belgium ahead of a weekend Euro 2020 qualifier against Kazakhstan, had been informed and the deal could be announced later.
Sky Sports television said Chelsea had wanted in the region of £130 million (S$225 million), a fee that could ultimately be reached through performance-related clauses.
Hazard, who was set to become a free agent in June 2020, guided Chelsea to the Europa League title in Baku last month with two goals in a 4-1 win over London rivals Arsenal.
"My dream was to play in the Premier League and I did it for seven years. I think it's a goodbye," he said after that game.
He joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 for £32 million and won the Europa League in his first season.
He later won the Premier League title in 2015 and 2017 as well as one League Cup and FA Cup.
He scored 16 goals and created another 15 in the Premier League last season as Chelsea finished third in the table.

Spanish media call for Valverde axe

Spanish media call for Valverde axe

LONDON • It is arguably the worst European defeat in Barcelona's history and coach Ernesto Valverde is unlikely to survive what Catalan newspaper Sport headlined "The biggest farce in history" on its all-black front page.
All season, the three-goal capitulation to Serie A side Roma in the Champions League quarter-final last term hung like a dark pall.
Tuesday night was supposed to have been the opportunity to exorcise those ghosts from Italy.
Again they held a three-goal lead from the first leg at the Nou Camp. And again they imploded, this time more spectacularly, 4-0, for their heaviest defeat against an English side in all European competitions.
While the inquest into their latest European failure at Liverpool will be swift and far reaching, Valverde, who signed a new contract in February, albeit only until 2020, appears set to pay the price despite his domestic successes.
The Spanish champions are favourites to lift a second straight double with the King's Cup final against Valencia to come on May 25 but the fans have never particularly taken to his pragmatic tactics, deeming them to be a "betrayal (of) the Blaugrana DNA based on possession and control of the game".
The Roma thrashing had been a stick to beat him with, but after their collapse at Anfield, the Spanish media believe he no longer has a leg to stand on. The headlines screamed for his head yesterday as Barcelona's wait for a first Champions League final since 2015 goes on.
Sport called it "the darkest page in their history", saying: "Without doubt, Valverde holds a lot of responsibility for this disaster, because when the moment of truth arrived, he made the same mistakes as last year.
"The Champions League is too big for Valverde."
Marca, which is pro-Real Madrid, labelled the hammering as "a historic failure", while L'Esportiu declared that "the consensus is clear and is expected to bring consequences for everyone".

  • 17

Number of times Lionel Messi was dispossessed.

  • 8

All Barcelona's shots came through Messi, who attempted five strikes and created three.

Valverde, 55, admitted in the aftermath that "the coach has to take responsibility". He added: "I do not know how it's going to affect me. It's very painful for us, especially for our people, it's the second year they've come back like that."
Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu accepted questions would be asked of Valverde's future following the "disastrous night", alluding to "time to reflect and explain".
The players were not spared either. Like Marca, Sport gave no player more than three marks out of 10, while Ivan Rakitic and Philippe Coutinho were both rated zero by the latter.
Former Liverpool favourite Luis Suarez, who was mercilessly booed by the home fans, conceded they had no place to hide and "have to be ready for all the criticism that is going to rain down on us now".
The forward, who spent three years with the Reds from 2011 to 2014, said: "For their fourth goal, we looked like schoolboys... We are very sad. We have to do a lot of self-criticism because this is the second time that the same thing has happened to us."
Teammate Sergio Busquets, who appeared tearful, could only apologise to the travelling fans, saying: "I just want to say sorry. We didn't want this to happen again... It's hard to say anything else."

Football: 'Proud' Son sparks Koreans to Asian Cup win as Iran fire blanks

ABU DHABI (AFP) - An effervescent Son Heung-min inspired title-chasing South Korea to a comfortable 2-0 victory over China on Wednesday (Jan 16) to finish top of their Asian Cup group.
Iran, joint favourites with the Koreans, also advanced as group winners despite being held to a goalless draw by bitter rivals Iraq, while Kyrgyzstan squeaked through on their tournament debut.
Hwang Ui-jo and Kim Min-jae were on target as South Korea, boosted by the arrival of their talisman, ran China ragged in Abu Dhabi.
Son won the penalty converted by Hwang and fizzed in the assist for Kim to help South Korea finish top of Group C with a perfect nine points as they look to end 59 years of Asian Cup hurt.
"Of course I'm a bit tired - I didn't expect to play for so long," Korean captain Son told AFP after completing 87 minutes despite a punishing run of 13 games for Tottenham since the start of December.
"But it's an honour to wear this red shirt and play for the national team. My first game of the tournament, clean sheet, 2-0 - it's a happy afternoon!"
Marcello Lippi's China finished as group runners-up having likewise already sealed their place in the last 16 by winning their first two matches.
Spurs forward Son, who played in the London club's 1-0 defeat by Manchester United three days ago, showed quick feet to tempt China defender Shi Ke into a rash lunge after 12 minutes.
Hwang calmly tucked away the spot-kick to send thousands of Korean 'Red Devils' fans wild at the compact Al Nahyan Stadium.
South Korea, who beat Asian Cup first-timers Philippines and Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in their opening two games, went for the jugular.
A Hwang Hee-chan rocket forced China goalkeeper Yan Junling into a fingertip save before Hwang Ui-jo curled an effort against the post.
The Koreans doubled their lead six minutes after the break when Son's corner was met by Kim's thumping header.
Son went down clutching his ankle after a meaty challenge from China's tattooed defender Zhang Linpeng late on.
But the 26-year-old appeared to suffer no lasting damage and was given a rousing reception when he trotted off three minutes from time.

TITLE DROUGHT

South Korea, who famously reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2002, have failed to win Asian football's most coveted prize since winning back-to-back titles in 1956 and 1960.
But the addition of the mercurial Son has clearly energised the 2015 runners-up, who suddenly look a very different proposition.
"We are very satisfied with the effort that Son made," said South Korea coach Paulo Bento, who is yet to learn the identity of his team's last-16 opponents.
"What's important in this moment is to enjoy this result and then go again."
China, Asian Cup finalists in 1984 and 2004, began the competition by edging Kyrgyzstan 2-1 and overpowering the Philippines 3-0.
But they were no match for South Korea and were lucky not to concede further goals in a lop-sided game.
"Let's be honest, the Korean team is much stronger than us - they're faster, technically superior and play with greater intensity," shrugged Lippi, whose side face Thailand in the last 16.
"They are one of the favourites to win the tournament - we have to accept that and focus on our next challenge."
Iran, themselves looking to end a 43-year title drought, fired blanks in Dubai but still topped Group D on goal difference from Iraq after thrashing Yemen 5-0 and beating Vietnam 2-0.
Elsewhere, a Vitalij Lux hat-trick sent Sven-Goran Eriksson's Philippines crashing out and Kyrgyzstan through from Group C as one of the best third-placed teams after a 3-1 victory.
The Filipino "street dogs" grabbed a late consolation through Stephan Schrock - their first-ever Asian Cup goal and one celebrated with gusto by their noisy fans.
Vietnam eased past war-torn Yemen 2-0 for their first points after a brilliant Nguyen Quang Hai free-kick and a penalty from Que Ngoc Hai.
