Football: Jose Mourinho targets June return to club management, rules out handling national team
(REUTERS) - Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is targeting a return to club management during the close season in June and has an idea about the type of club he wants to take charge of, the Portuguese has said.
The 56-year-old has been out of a job since he was sacked by the English giants in December following a dismal run of results that left them sixth in the Premier League standings, 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
"What I have in mind is that I would like to be back in the summer, in June, for a new club, for a new pre-season," Mourinho told BeIN Sports.
"I know exactly what I don't want. That's the reason why I had to say (no) already to three or four different offers. And I know what I want, in terms of not a specific club but the nature of the job, the dimension of the job."
Mourinho had said in January that he was not sure if he would manage another club in England after stints with Chelsea and United.
He, however, ruled out taking the reins of a national team as he prefers the day-to-day work that comes with being a club manager.
"I don't think so," he said, when asked if he would take charge of a national team. "I think a national team job is a very specific job.
"I like daily football, I like daily work, I like many competitions, I like matches and I want to stay in football club level. But who knows?"

Football: Reds can be 'Invincibles' this season, says Unai Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery feels Liverpool can match the achievement of Arsenal's "Invincibles" by going unbeaten in the Premier League this season.
His predecessor Arsene Wenger won 26 matches in the 2003-04 term to become the second side, after Preston North End in 1889, not to lose a league game in a season.
Manchester City lost twice last season and Chelsea once in the 2004-05 term despite both clubs' considerable wealth and abundance of star players, illustrating how difficult it has been for teams to replicate Wenger's feat.
But Liverpool, who are on an eight-game winning streak, have racked up 16 league victories with just three draws and have a six-point lead at the top of the table as they host the Gunners today.
Emery believes the development they have shown from flirting with Europe to top-four contenders to current league front-runners - Jurgen Klopp's men were installed as title favourites by British bookmakers on Thursday - makes the Reds "an example" for his team.
He said: "Liverpool are doing it and they can do it (by remaining undefeated until the end of the season). The progression is clear.
"They were out of the Champions League, we need to be demanding of ourselves, but time and patience are very important."
However, the Spaniard will not only have to prepare for the "very big test" amid rumours surrounding the futures of Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey, and doubts over defenders Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal, but also a looming Football Association (FA) charge over his head.
The FA on Thursday charged Emery with "improper conduct" after he kicked a water bottle at a Brighton fan during their 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium.
Arsenal were also hit by the death of their former chairman Peter Hill-Wood, who stepped down in 2013 after 31 years, yesterday.
The 82-year-old, the third member of his family to fill the role, had been responsible for the hiring of Wenger and the club issued a statement expressing their "deep regret".
It read: "As we celebrate the unique achievement of 100 consecutive years in the top flight this season, the Hill-Wood family were at the helm for the lion's share of this special century... Peter and his family's influence on the club cannot be understated."
But Klopp still feels Arsenal, despite their issues and having dropped seven points since Dec 2, remain "a really good team".
Brushing off Emery's "Invincibles" comments as mind games, he said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "That is not the Unai Emery I know. This is not them waving the white flag.
"It will be a really tough game. (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang and (Alexandre) Lacazette are a good strike two. They are strong with the ball, lively, counter-attacks are crazy-quick. (But) we are focused on ourselves."

Keep fighting, says Ramos after Real win derby to go 2nd
MADRID • Thibaut Courtois overcame the toy rat insults and Gareth Bale delivered a timely reminder of his talents with his 100th goal for Real Madrid in Saturday's feisty derby victory that reignited their LaLiga hopes.
The 3-1 over Atletico Madrid - their fifth straight league win - helped Los Blancos leapfrog their city rivals into second place for the first time since September.
They are on 45 points, five behind Barcelona, who played at Athletic Bilbao in the late game yesterday.
Real continued their revival under Santiago Solari in another impressive performance at the Wanda Metropolitano, aided by some fortunate decisions.
"LaLiga is there to fight for, there are a lot of points to win and any team can make your life hard," said Real captain Sergio Ramos.
"Winning the league motivates us, it's a really balanced competition and we have to keep fighting for it and make life difficult for Barcelona."
Bale had been left out of the starting line-up for the second time in four days, after he was also a substitute against the Catalans in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.
He ended the hosts' hopes of a comeback on 74 minutes after Ramos' penalty put Real in front at half-time, with Antoine Griezmann earlier cancelling out Casemiro's acrobatic opener.
The Welshman's goal was not lost on Solari, even if his celebration drew criticism, after he appeared to make an insulting gesture towards the Atletico fans.
"It's great for Gareth," said the coach. "He was very happy and happy about his goal, which helped decide the game, because the game was alive and he finished it."
By the time Atletico's Thomas Partey was sent off with 10 minutes left, the game was up and Courtois could have been forgiven for breathing a sigh of relief at the final whistle. The Belgian, who spent three years at Atletico, was playing in the white of Real for the first time at the home of his former club.
He was whistled during the warm-up and before kick-off, as the Atletico ultras behind the goal hurled dozens of toy rats towards his head. A sign read, "Thibaut - Rata", just to underline the point.
Alvaro Morata had gone the opposite way, also via Chelsea, after starting out at Real. He was cheered and, despite a quiet game, would have scored but for the video assistant referee (VAR) ruling out an impressive lob in the second half for offside.
The system was also involved in the penalty incident which saw Jose Gimenez dive in from behind on Real midfielder Vinicius.
The foul might have been outside the box, but the VAR disagreed.

The system was also involved in the penalty incident which saw Jose Gimenez dive in from behind on Real midfielder Vinicius.
The foul might have been outside the box, but the VAR disagreed.

Football: Ronaldo scores as Juventus held to a Champions League draw at Ajax
AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo produced yet another quality goal to add to his collection and help Juventus to a 1-1 draw at Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday (April 10).
Juventus took the lead on the stroke of halftime as Portuguese forward Ronaldo began an attacking move inside his own half before sprinting down field and diving to head in a clever chip from Joao Cancelo.
"Ronaldo proved again he is from a different level, the timing of his player is so different from the others," said an admiring Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Ajax equalised 30 seconds into the second half after Cancelo lost control of the ball to allow David Neres to run down the left wing, cut inside and curl the ball past Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
The result leaves the Serie A side in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals in next week's return leg in Turin. However, they will be mindful of Ajax's 4-1 away win over Real Madrid in the last round that eliminated the holders 5-3 on aggregate.
Hakim Ziyech had several efforts at goal in a lively start for the youthful Dutch team, who have come through the pre-group phase qualifying round to reach the last eight.
Donny van de Beek scraped the outside of the upright with a 25th minute effort from close range after opening up space for himself in the penalty area in Ajax's best chance of the first half.
But Juventus, with the 34-year-old Ronaldo central to their attacks, worked their way into the contest and came close themselves when the forward set up Federico Bernardeschi to turn and shoot in the 37th minute. But he was just off target.
Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick in the previous round against Atletico Madrid, then scored a 125th Champions League goal with the last move of the first half.
"He is a predator in the box. He waited for a gap and then sprinted past two players," conceded Ajax's teenage captain Matthijs de Ligt.
After equalising, Ajax then dominated possession but were guilty of over-elaborate passing and were also fortunate not to have given away a penalty when defender Nicolas Tagliafico was tugging on the jersey of Juventus captain Mario Mandzukic.
Spanish referee Carlos del Cerro Grande paused briefly in the 53rd minute to presumably hear from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) but resumed play before TV replays showed that Juventus had been denied a decent claim.
Tagliafico will miss the second leg next Tuesday after being booked late in the first half.
Juve hit the upright in the closing stages through substitute Douglas Costa although Ajax could have had the last say as Dusan Tadic missed a good chance in stoppage time.
"A 1-1 score is not what we had hoped for but we are still well in," said Ajax coach Erik ten Hag. "We had a lot of patient possession and we created one or two good chances."
More than 100 Juventus supporters were detained by Dutch police before the match while home fans were also arrested as a water cannon was used outside the ground.

Football: New-look Germany make promising start with Serbia draw
WOLFSBURG, Germany (REUTERS) - Germany's new-look team made a promising return to the international stage with a 1-1 draw against Serbia in a friendly on Wednesday (March 20), showing signs of improvement following a disastrous 2018.
The Germans, knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage and relegated in the Nations League last year, had only one player from their 2014 World Cup victory in the starting line-up and their oldest outfield player was aged 24.
More aggressive and quicker than in recent games, with Kai Havertz, Julian Brandt and Leroy Sane playing behind forward Timo Werner, the hosts needed only three minutes to get a shot on target with Havertz firing the ball at Serbia keeper Marko Dmitrovic following a quick passing move.
Coach Joachim Loew sent world champions Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Mueller into international retirement in a surprise decision last week as his team prepare to launch their Euro 2020 qualification campaign against the Netherlands on Sunday.
Serbia went forward after 11 minutes and their first corner bounced off the back of two players to land perfectly for Luka Jovic to head in for his first international goal.
The 21-year-old, who has scored 22 goals in 35 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt this season, is likely to be among the biggest transfer targets this summer, with Real Madrid and Barcelona among clubs reportedly interested.
Werner twice went close to an equaliser before Serbia, who won promotion in the Nations League after an undefeated run in their group, wasted a chance when Adem Ljajic fired a shot over the bar.
But the Germans kept their foot firmly on the gas and wasted several chances in the second half before substitute Leon Goretzka grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 69th minute.
"In the first half the automation in this new team, playing together for the first time, did not function that well," Loew told reporters.
"In the second half the team sent a very good signal that we can increase pressure and we can increase the tempo. We had a lot of chances and we missed the final touch a bit. That is also part of the learning experience.
"Overall, I am very satisfied with the mentality, the pressure we created." Serbia, who had Dmitrovic to thank for hanging on to the draw as the keeper made several saves to deny the Germans a second goal, were left with 10 players when Milan Pavlov was sent off for a reckless challenge on Sane.
The Manchester City winger was taken off but Loew said his injury was not too serious and he would be fit for Sunday.
"It was a vicious foul. Sane was lucky and got away with not getting hurt but such fouls can break bones."

Football: Spurs' Pochettino keen on return to Spain and flattered by Real Madrid interest
LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino says he would like to return in Spain in the future and said he welcomes his name being linked with the Real Madrid job as it speaks highly of his achievements with Spurs.
Santiago Solari's future as Real coach hangs in the balance after three defeats in a row which have effectively ended the club's chances of a trophy, culminating with a 4-1 loss to Ajax Amsterdam which knocked them out of the Champions League.
Although Solari will take charge of Madrid's La Liga game at Real Valladolid on Sunday, reports in the Spanish media say he could be dismissed next week.
"My relation with Spain will always be great and I would love to return one day and oversee a brand of football that could win games and excite people," Pochettino told Spanish television network RTVE in an interview on Friday (March 8).
"Of course I would come back to Spain, I'm always open to new experiences and projects."
Pochettino, who began his coaching career with Espanyol and has taken Spurs to the Champions League quarter-finals and into third place in the Premier League, is one of three names being mentioned in Spain as Madrid's next target.
Liverpool's Juergen Klopp and Jose Mourinho, who was sacked by Manchester United in December and has coached at Real before, are said to be the club's other main choices for the role.
"I take it (Madrid's interest) as something positive, it means someone has noticed that we are doing something right," added the Argentine.
Pochettino also said he looked upon Tottenham striker Harry Kane as one of his children, but would not answer whether Real Madrid could take the England forward and him to Spain next season.
"If I answer that my chairman (Daniel Levy) will get very angry with me for doing this interview. Or perhaps he won't mind," Pochettino said.
"Harry is like my son, he has made his name with us, he's one of the best strikers in the world."

'Massive' victory gives Pochettino renewed belief, Football

Depay repays Koeman's faith
Depay repays Koeman's faith
ROTTERDAM • Memphis Depay might be battling for both game time and goals at club level, but his headline performance for his country at the start of the Euro 2022 qualifiers on Thursday has won him the full backing of Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman.
"A wonderful player. You saw what he is capable of, even if he is playing less at his club," the Dutch coach said, after the Lyon striker scored twice and made the other two goals in a comfortable 4-0 Group C win over Belarus.
"Memphis is very important pillar for us and he showed that," added Koeman, making clear the 25-year-old would be a starter when the Dutch host Germany in their next qualifier tomorrow.
"The ideal is to have a settled starting line-up to be able to work with. You see that with (world champions) France, how infrequently they change their team."
For Depay, the night could have gone a little better even after setting up Liverpool duo Georginio Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk for the other two goals.
"If you score twice, you always want a third," he said of missing out on a hat-trick in Rotterdam.
"But I'll save that for later," he added, with a wink to Dutch television station NOS.
Depay scored in the first minute as the visitors made an early defensive error to get the Dutch campaign off to a perfect start.
The Netherlands had missed out on the last European Championship in France and also last year's World Cup in Russia and are rebuilding under Koeman.
"It was a great start and, if you begin like that, it makes the rest of the evening easier," Depay added.
"We said that to each other before we went out that we wanted to push hard for a goal in the opening 10 minutes.
"But you've also got to have a little luck."
Depay has scored six Ligue 1 goals this season in comparison to 19 in the last campaign as his form has dipped in the French league.
He has also not played in the last two league matches.
"I don't think I need to say anything about that now," he said, when asked about his situation at his club.
"Here I am enjoying being home with my teammates and getting the confidence of the coach. We have a good squad and a good coaching staff.
"We've got to ensure we stick together as a team and that everyone buys into our ambitions."
Koeman's exciting young side are now top of Group C and level on three points with Northern Ireland, ahead of tomorrow's clash with Germany - whom they knocked out of the Nations League the last time they met in November.
The Dutch have been a revelation since Koeman took charge in the wake of their failure to qualify for the World Cup.
They beat both Germany and world champions France to win their Nations League group and set up a semi-final clash with England in June.

(REUTERS) - Goals from Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min helped Tottenham Hotspur overcome Leicester City 3-1 in an entertaining Premier League match at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (Feb 10).Â
Tottenham went ahead through Sanchez who scored his first goal for the London club by meeting Eriksen’s whipped cross with a diving header in the 33rd minute, although Leicester’s players complained he was in an offside position.Â
Leicester missed the chance to equalise on the hour mark when substitute Jamie Vardy’s penalty – his first touch after coming on – was pushed away by Hugo Lloris after Jan Vertonghen was adjudged to have fouled James Maddison in the box.Â
“Lloris saved us a few times and we were lucky that he took out the penalty which gave us confidence. You felt that in the whole stadium, and we’re happy to have Hugo,†Eriksen said.Â
Tottenham doubled their lead three minutes later as Eriksen collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a fierce shot past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Vardy made up for his earlier miss by tapping in from close range 14 minutes from the final whistle after a well worked move allowed Ricardo Pereira to drill in a cross from the right.Â
After a sustained period of Leicester pressure, Son settled nerves of the home supporters by slotting in Tottenham’s third with a solo run from the halfway line. Victory took title contenders Tottenham to 60 points from 26 matches, five points behind leaders Liverpool and two adrift of champions Manchester City who play Chelsea later on Sunday.Â
Eriksen said Tottenham had showed plenty of character to see off a determined Leicester, a quality that could help them in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg clash against Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund.Â
“We didn’t make life easy for ourselves,†the Dane said. “The last three games we won in the last 10 minutes, which shows the character of the team and we did that again today. It’s going to be the same on Wednesday.â€
Tottenham had a first-half penalty claim denied after Harry Maguire appeared to bring down Son with the referee booking the South Korean for simulation, a decision manager Mauricio Pochettino described as “unbelievableâ€.Â
“When you compare the situation with the penalty for Leicester, unbelievable... I’m more relaxed because we won,†Pochettino added. “Do you think that we’re a team trying to cheat a referee? Come on, we’re one of the nicest teams on the pitch.â€
Leicester boss Claude Puel bemoaned his side’s finishing.Â
“Throughout the game we had a feeling we can score... we had chances and half chances,†the Frenchman said. “It’s difficult to accept with all the good intention to go without the reward.Â
“We need a little more conviction and a clinical edge.â€

PARIS (AFP) - Kylian Mbappe stole a winner as Paris Saint-Germain beat Nantes 1-0 on Saturday (Dec 22) to go into the winter break unbeaten in the French Ligue 1, as Thierry Henry's suffered defeat by rock-bottom Guingamp on Saturday.
World Cup star Mbappe stole in at the far post in the 67th minute for his 13th league goal of the season, making him France's top scorer with Neymar away on holidays in Brazil.
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel can also go on holiday relaxed with his club on 47 points, as second-placed Lille, 13 points adrift, lost 2-1 at home to Toulouse.
With Neymar away, Angel di Maria was in the line-up and came close to making it 2-0, forcing a fine save from Ciprian Tatarusanu, who then watched the Argentinian hit the crossbar from the rebound.
Meanwhile, third-placed Lyon drew 1-1 at fourth-placed Montpellier after opening the scoring thanks to their captain Nabil Fekir, before a great header from Ruben Aguilar gave the surprise-package southerners a share of the spoils.
Henry's Monaco were dreadful and the former Arsenal striker spat on the ground after Nolan Roux of Guingamp made fools of the Monaco defence to make it 2-0.
Monaco were champions in 2017 but now have only 13 points from 18 matches, just two more than Guingamp.
Strasbourg paid homage to the victims of a terror attack that killed five people on Dec 11 in their first home game since, as they won 2-0 against Nice.
Meanwhile, Marseille, in sixth, drew 1-1 at Brittany outfit Angers and fifth-placed Sant-Etienne beat Dijon 3-0.

Heart and fight key to Spurs stunning win, says Eriksen
Heart and fight key to Spurs stunning win, says Eriksen
AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen said they threw tactics out the window and relied on grit and heart to come back from 3-0 down on aggregate to beat Ajax Amsterdam on away goals and reach the Champions League final on Wednesday (May 8).
Having lost the first leg in London 1-0, Tottenham got off to the worst possible start in Amsterdam by going 2-0 down on the night.
The second leg turned on its head after halftime, however, as Lucas Moura scored twice in quick succession before netting a 96th minute effort to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-3 on aggregate.
"It was a non-tactical performance, it was more of a fight, more of a heart performance, and that's how we won it," Danish playmaker Eriksen told BT Sport.
"It was a ridiculous game. We were really far down, we tried to fight back and we're just lucky. I feel sorry for Ajax, they played a very good game against us.
"In the end we're just lucky we scored. It's a relief, because we've been fighting for this and I think it's a dream for everyone to be in the Champions League final."
The midfielder revealed that there was no great tactical change at halftime as Spurs simply rolled up their sleeves and went at Ajax in the second half.
"We weren't able to look ourselves in the mirror if we (were to) go down three or four nil today - we had to fight back, there was no other option," Eriksen said.
After Liverpool fought back from a 3-0 first-leg defeat to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate on Tuesday, the final will be an all-English affair.
Spurs defender Danny Rose said that he had taken inspiration from the Merseysiders.
Â
Â
Â
Â
"We saw Liverpool last night. It goes to show it's not over until it's over. Disappointed with the first leg, how we started and we started like that tonight. But after the break we came out," Rose said.
"The gaffer mentioned Liverpool's display at the hotel before the match - the gaffer doesn't mind us losing but we have to lose the right way."
Moura, however, was not prepared to let the match slip, and slotted the winner for Spurs deep in stoppage time.
"It's been a rollercoaster of a season. For him (Moura) to get us in the final, he'll be a hero. I hope he gets a statue in England after this ... I'm blown away, there's really no words for it," Eriksen said.
There was one major tactical shift that did play a crucial role in the victory, however. At half-time Pochettino took out midfielder Victor Wanyama and replaced him with Spanish forward Fernando Llorente.
Llorente, whose main asset is his height and strength in the air, placed himself on Ajax defender Daley Blind and that upset the solidity of the Dutch defence.
The Spaniard's presence caused confusion and created instability which Moura was able to exploit to the full.
With a big man as a focal point for the attack, Tottenham were able to take a more direct approach - with crosses from deep and in the latter stages, hopeful punts into the box.
Llorente would not have been on the field had Spurs' first choice striker Harry Kane been fit but the injured England captain was in the dressing room at the break and he said the focus was purely on effort.
"At half time we said it is 45 minutes to give everything... the lads dug deep, showed passion, showed character, showed heart and that is what it's all about," said Kane.
"Over the two legs we didn't play as well as we would have liked but we found a way to win," he added.
Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, in Amsterdam as a pundit for BT Sport, said the Llorente introduction had been key.
"Fernando Llorente - what a substitution. He stood on Daley Blind. Blind couldn't deal with him and the boys came up behind him."

LIVERPOOL INSPIRATION
Spurs defender Danny Rose said that he had taken inspiration from the Merseysiders.

Â

Rescuers try to recover body from Sala's plane
LONDON • British crash investigators are two days into an underwater operation to recover a body from the wreckage of the plane carrying Argentinian striker Emiliano Sala in the English Channel.
The mission started on Tuesday and, as of press time yesterday, the body had yet to be recovered. According to news website WalesOnline, the recovery could take days as it is "dependent on the weather, current and tide conditions".
"We are attempting to recover the body. If we are successful, we will consider the feasibility of recovering the aircraft wreckage," said an Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) spokesman.
The light aircraft carrying the 28-year-old - Cardiff's record buy at £15 million (S$26.3 million) - had been flying from Nantes to the Welsh capital when air traffic controllers lost contact with pilot David Ibbotson near the Channel island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
David Mearns, the shipwreck hunter hired by Sala's family after funds had been raised through an online crowdfunding campaign, found the plane wreckage last Sunday.
The AAIB has since taken over operations, but it warned on Tuesday that strong tides "mean we can only use the remotely operated vehicle for limited periods each day".
"Regardless of the results, we will not be making a further statement until the families have been informed," it said.
Horacio, Sala's father, has given up hope of finding his son alive, but he is hoping for a successful outcome to the operation to get closure.
He told Fox Sports: "There's no longer any hope. We hope the two bodies are inside (the plane).
"It's over, the only thing I hope now is that they find them."

Football: Fulham frustrated as Wolves snatch late leveller in opening Boxing Day EPL clash
LONDON (AFP) - Fulham's bid to avoid relegation from the English Premier League suffered a fresh setback as Wolves rescued a late 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage on Wednesday (Dec 26).
Ryan Sessegnon came off the bench to put struggling Fulham ahead with just a quarter of an hour left.
But Romain Saiss hit an 85th-minute equaliser to spoil Fulham's hopes of bolstering their survival bid.
Claudio Ranieri's side temporarily climbed off the bottom of the table, one point ahead of Huddersfield before the rest of the Boxing Day schedule.
But Fulham have claimed just six points from seven games since former Leicester boss Ranieri took charge.
That concerning run had left them bottom on Christmas Day - with only three of the previous 26 top-flight teams to have filled that spot going on to avoid relegation.
This was another tale of woe for the Cottagers.
Wolves threatened early on in the form of a spectacular Raul Jimenez bicycle kick that flashed over.
Fulham survived strong penalty appeals from the visitors as Denis Odoi appeared to handle a high ball into the area.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has seven Premier League goals this season, was causing constant problems for Wolves but his finishing let him down.
The Serb was on the end of a Cyrus Christie cross but headed straight at Rui Patricio.
Christie then shot low across goal and Mitrovic was agonisingly close to turning the ball in at the far post.
Mitrovic should have scored five minutes before the break.
Taking a touch, he turned his marker and went past another Wolves defender, only to produce a tame effort that Patricio saved with ease.
Fulham snatched the lead in the 74th minute when Patricio made a weak attempt to punch clear from Alfie Mawson's header and the ball dropped to Sessegnon, whose shot crossed the line before Wolves could clear.
That would have taken the Cottagers off the bottom, but Wolves rescued a point.
Ivan Cavaleiro's low cross was not dealt with by Fulham's Joe Bryan and Saiss arrived at the far post to slot home his first Premier League goal.
Mitrovic should have won it in stoppage time, but his effort was cleared off the line by Conor Coady.

Relatives raise funds to continue search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala
LONDON • Relatives of missing Premier League player Emiliano Sala on Saturday began a privately funded search for his plane, which disappeared over the English Channel, after local coast guard called off their own rescue mission.
The news was announced by an online fundraising campaign for the operation, and confirmed to Agence France-Presse by Maria Jose Sottini, a friend of the Argentinian striker's family.
"The appeal launched late Friday afternoon enabled Emiliano Sala's relatives, via a specialised organisation, to resume research in the Channel early this Saturday morning," said a statement on the GoFundMe website.
"Two boats are leading the operations."
Around 4,000 people have so far contributed to the campaign, which was organised by Sala's agency, Sport Cover, raising almost €321,343 (S$496,167).
The target of €300,000 was reached within a day.
According to the BBC, fellow footballers including Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot and Corentin Tolisso of Bayern Munich have donated to the fund, as did Sala's former manager at Nantes, Vahid Halilhodzic.
A light aircraft transporting Sala, who signed for Cardiff City two Saturdays ago, vanished from the radar around 20km north of the Channel island of Guernsey last Monday night.
The 28-year-old, who moved from French Ligue 1 club Nantes for a club-record fee of £15 million (S$26.7 million), had been flying to the Welsh capital for his first training session after saying goodbye to his former teammates.
Rescue workers formally called off the search for the missing plane on Thursday.
As investigators probe what happened, it emerged that while his football agent Willie McKay had arranged for the ill-fated flight, he did not choose the Piper Malibu plane or its pilot, who has since been named as David Ibbotson.
"We had no involvement in selecting a plane or a pilot and wish to make clear we do not own the plane that Emiliano flew on," the Briton said in a statement.
