Football: Cardiff 'shocked' by report that pilot in crash that killed Sala not qualified for night flights

LONDON (AFP) - Cardiff claim they are stunned by a report that the pilot in the plane crash that killed Emiliano Sala was not qualified to fly at night.
The English Premier League football club said they remain "deeply concerned" that the pilot David Ibbotson and those who arranged the flight "seemingly completely disregarded the rules of flying and put Mr Sala's life in such danger".
Sala died when the Piper Malibu aircraft they were travelling in came down in the English Channel on Jan 21, two days after Cardiff had signed the Argentinian striker from French club Nantes.
The BBC on Saturday reported that Ibbotson was thought to have been colour-blind and that his licence restricted him to flying in daytime hours only.
Cardiff said in a statement: "Cardiff City is shocked to hear the pilot, David Ibbotson, may not have been permitted to fly at night.
"The club remains deeply concerned that the pilot, and those who arranged the flight, seemingly completely disregarded the rules of flying and put Mr Sala's life in such danger.
"We believe those who are responsible should be held fully accountable for their actions.

"We reiterate our support for the Air Charter Association's call for more awareness of and better enforcement against illegal flights."

Football: Palace 'keeper Wayne Hennessey, pictured waving, cleared of making Nazi salute

(REUTERS) - Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was cleared of making a Nazi salute by the English Football Association (FA) on Friday (April 5).
The Wales international was charged with an "aggravated breach" of the rules governing player conduct in January after being pictured with his right arm in the air in a photo posted on Instagram by Palace teammate Max Meyer.
Hennessey denied the charge, taking to Twitter to explain that he had been calling out and waving to attract the attention of the person behind the camera when the picture was taken.
"I'm delighted that the FA have found me not guilty of this charge," Hennessey said in a statement on Palace's website.
The photograph prompted an outcry on social media and the FA charged the 32-year-old with a breach of its rules relating to abusive, insulting or improper conduct and bringing the game into disrepute.
"This was a genuinely innocent moment, which appeared to be something completely different when captured on camera," Hennessey added.
"I want to state for the record that I abhor all forms of racism, fascism, anti-Semitism or discrimination of any kind."

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been a breath of fresh air the past month, not only because Manchester United are winning games again, but also because of his humility. Following yesterday's 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Reading at home, the caretaker boss has clinched his fifth victory from his opening five games - equalling the legendary manager Matt Busby's non-wartime club record.
It was a dream start for the Norwegian, but not once did he mention the record immediately after the win. It was all about looking ahead to the players' training camp in Dubai and the next Premier League match against Tottenham.
It was, in essence, all about the collective rather than the individual, and he also admitted that the win did not come easy even against a Championship side.
"Two-nil, a clean sheet again, and I have to say they made it tough for us. And probably I made it tough for us, because you know when you make nine changes, it's never easy for a team that's never played together. So I'm delighted we're in the next round," he said.
"We learnt a lot. We know we need some fitness work (in Dubai), and to work on relations.
"If we repeat that performance at Wembley (against Spurs), we won't have a clean sheet or any points."

  • Goals Romelu Lukaku has scored in his last 14 FA Cup appearances, including netting six in seven for Manchester United.

United were hardly the well-oiled machine yesterday, playing with their second-string players.
Solskjaer kept only Phil Jones and Juan Mata from the team who started the 2-0 win over Newcastle and the disjointed display proved his point that he made it difficult.
Reading enjoyed enough possession early on to have the hosts defending deep though, when United clicked into gear, they carried a potent threat.

They were soon ahead courtesy of the video assistant referee. As Juan Mata touched the ball off to Fred, Omar Richards took the Spaniard down. Fred found the net but was ruled offside but, after a rather lengthy consultation, the video official gave a penalty that Mata dispatched with aplomb.
The second goal came in first-half stoppage time. Alexis Sanchez threaded a pass to Romelu Lukaku and the centre forward left Reading goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola a spectator and slotted home.
It was Sanchez's second assist in two games, but he was forced to be taken off due to what seemed to be a slight hamstring injury midway through the second half.
What followed prompted some laughs on social media when he accidentally sat on Solskjaer's seat when the manager was at the touchline. The Norwegian returned, laughed and gave Sanchez a light pat on the back before "kicking him out".
"Sitting on the gaffer's seat... he wouldn't have got away so lightly if it had been (Alex) Ferguson," wrote one user. "Sanchez out of position yet again," said another.
Solskjaer's first big test will come at Tottenham next Sunday and it remains to be seen if he will still be a happy man at the end of that game.

Football: Trophy hunter Guardiola happy to miss out on winter getaway

Football: Trophy hunter Guardiola happy to miss out on winter getaway

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola insisted on Friday (Jan 11) he will be happy if Manchester City have no time for a mid-season break, because it will mean they are still competing for every trophy.
City's rivals Manchester United took the opportunity this week for a warm-weather training trip to Dubai, allowing boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer time to work on his squad's fitness.
Guardiola did take his players to Abu Dhabi last March, after their surprise FA Cup fifth round defeat at Wigan left them with a free week.
The City boss will consider a similar trip this time round if an early FA Cup exit leaves a gap in their match schedule.
But he acknowledges that it may be difficult to fit in such a break if City remain in the hunt for all four major prizes.
"Hopefully not, because that means we continue in the FA Cup and especially in the Champions League. We will see. If not, then we will have this time in summer time," Guardiola told a press conference.
"Last season, it was quite similar. But then after Wigan beat us in the FA Cup, we went there."
City are still in contention for a quadruple of Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup titles, something that has never been achieved in the English game.
They took a significant step towards winning one of those trophies on Wednesday, thrashing third tier Burton Albion 9-0 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.
It means that, barring something extraordinary in the second leg on January 23, City will feature in the final at Wembley on Feb 24.
That creates another barrier to a potential winter vacation as their league fixture at Everton, scheduled for the previous day, would have to be rearranged.
"Did you see the schedule this morning? I saw the schedule, and the Everton game will be fixed for another week, so we don't have many (spaces in the schedule for a warm-weather break), so we'll see," Guardiola said.

TITLE RACE

City, having taken a step towards a cup final, resume their attempt to catch leaders Liverpool in the Premier League title race on Monday, when they host Wolves.
Guardiola's side, in second place, are four points behind Liverpool after beating them 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Jan 3.
It was Liverpool's first league defeat of the season, and may have increased the pressure on a team trying to become champions of England for the first time since 1990.
But Guardiola rejected the suggestion that he is happier chasing than leading.
"I prefer to be in Liverpool's position," he said.
Guardiola hopes to have Sergio Aguero back for the Wolves match, with the striker having missed City's past two matches because of illness, while Vincent Kompany is close to recovering from a muscle problem.
City have found it tough keeping pace with Liverpool, despite collecting 50 points from 21 games, a better average this season than Barcelona, who are top of La Liga.
Barcelona have collected 40 points from 18 games, an average of 2.22 per match, while City's average of 2.38 is currently only good enough for second place.
"The Premier League is incredibly tough," he said. You don't realise how tough it is until you are here for the amount of games, the weather, the time needed for players to recover."

Football: Everton probe Jordan Pickford bar brawl allegations

LONDON (AFP) - England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is under investigation by his club Everton about his alleged involvement in a brawl in Sunderland on Sunday (March 31).
The 25-year-old - who shone at last year's World Cup - is believed to have reacted when revellers in a bar directed derogatory remarks at his fiancee Megan, who recently had their first child Arlo.
A video has spread on social media in which onlookers can be heard shouting "Jordan" as a fight breaks out before the man, believed to be Pickford, is dragged away.
Pickford had played in Everton's 2-0 away win over West Ham on Saturday before spending a day off in his home city.
"The club has been made aware of an alleged incident involving one of our players and we are looking into the matter," the Premier League club said.
Pickford came through the system at Sunderland but joined Everton for an initial £25 million (S$44.2 million) when they were relegated from the Premier League in June 2017.
He made his England debut five months later and was Gareth Southgate's first choice at the World Cup and was instrumental in their surprise run to the semi-finals.
He saved a spot-kick in the penalty shootout victory over Colombia in their last-16 clash and was man of the match in England's 2-0 win over Sweden in the quarter-finals.

Qatar in talks to buy a stake in Leeds

Qatar in talks to buy a stake in Leeds
LONDON • Qatar held advanced discussions to buy a stake in storied English Championship football team Leeds United on Monday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussions.
The gas-rich Gulf state, which has gained an outsized influence in global football, stunned the sports world when it secured the rights to host the World Cup in 2022.
Since that vote in 2010, it has been among the most consequential footballing nations, buying and investing huge amounts to turn French champions Paris Saint-Germain into a powerhouse team, and also becoming the one of the biggest acquirers of football rights through its beIN Sports network.
The move for Leeds, who missed out on a return to the Premier League after losing their play-off semi-final to Derby last month, would be Qatar's first foray into English football, and most likely will lead to further scrutiny into its affairs at home and abroad.
Human rights groups have drawn attention to the treatment of workers building their World Cup stadiums, while there have been allegations of wrongdoing over the way in which Qatar persuaded Fifa members during the bidding process for the showpiece event.
The talks with Leeds, who were relegated from the top flight in 2004 and have languished in the wilderness since, are at an advanced stage.
They stem from a personal relationship between the club's majority owner, Andrea Radrizzani, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the businessman who fronts state-backed Qatar Sports Investments.
A close friend of Qatar Emir Tamim Hamad Al-Thani, he is also the president of PSG and chairman of beIN Sports.
The initial talks with Qatar involve a stake sale, though there could be a provision for a full buyout later on, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.
An investment in Leeds would be Qatar's third in European football teams - as well as PSG, they own Belgian side Eupen.

Football: Villa return to Premier League with win over Derby County

LONDON (REUTERS) - Aston Villa returned to the Premier League, after a three year absence, beating Derby County 2-1 in the Championship playoff final at Wembley on Monday (May 27).
Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn put Villa 2-0 up before Martyn Waghorn pulled a goal back for Derby in the 81st minute but Dean Smith’s side held on for the victory against intense pressure.
The playoff final is considered the most lucrative single game of football in the world, earning Villa an estimated 170 million pounds (S$296.31 million) in revenue.
Norwich City and Sheffield United had already secured promotion to the top flight for next season after finishing in the top two positions in the second tier Championship.
El Ghazi opened the scoring just before the break with a diving header from cross from right by Ahmed Elmohamady.
McGinn doubled the advantage in the 59th minute when a deflected shot from El Ghazi looped into the area and Derby keeper Kelle Roos came out but was unable to capture the ball under challenge from McGinn who bundled the ball home.
Derby, managed by former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard, got back in the game when substitute Jack Marriott’s low shot was turned in by Waghorn and then piled on the pressure in the final minutes but were unable to break through.

Football: Klopp warns Liverpool to respect Porto

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool won't underestimate Porto after being handed a Champions League quarter-final clash with the Portuguese underdogs in Friday's (March 15) draw.
Klopp's side will go into the Porto tie as heavy favourites to advance to a semi-final showdown against Barcelona or Manchester United.
Liverpool crushed Porto 5-0 on aggregate in the Champions League last 16 just last season, scoring all five goals in the away leg before a goalless draw in the return at Anfield.
"What can I say? It's Porto and we've played there already and we know how good we had to be last year," Klopp told Liverpool's website.
"The result in the end was a strange one; it was very good for us, of course, but it was a strange one. In the second leg, we saw the character of Porto and the quality they have."
With United taking on Barca and Tottenham facing Manchester City in the other quarter-finals, Liverpool got what looks the easiest draw of the four Premier League teams.
But Reds boss Klopp is determined to ensure his side give Porto respect when they arrive on Merseyside for the first leg next month.

"I could not be further away from thinking it's the best draw because it isn't," he said.
"It is just the draw, it's the opponent we have to prepare for and that's all we will be thinking about from when we start preparing for the game."
Liverpool are hoping to go one better than last season when they were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
They are also competing for the club's first domestic league title since 1990, setting up a potentially glorious end to the season.
But Klopp isn't looking that far ahead and has warned his players that Porto will be desperate to avenge last year's thrashing.
"100 per cent (it could give them extra motivation). Porto were not on my wish list, but now they are our opponent, it is how it is and we have to play them," he said.
"The first thing you have to do is make sure everybody respects the opponent the right way - and we will do that 100 per cent. We will know about the quality of Porto and then we have to play the game."

Football: Tottenham announce first team's visit to Singapore and Shanghai in July

SINGAPORE - A Hurri-Kane is set to hit Singapore shores this summer as Tottenham Hotspur announced that their first team, headlined by England captain Harry Kane, will visit the Republic in July.
While the 25-year-old striker is currently nursing an ankle injury, he could return at the end of the month to boost English Premier League title hopes for Tottenham who are currently third behind Manchester City and Liverpool but within striking distance.
Other Spurs stars expected to feature prominently are France's World Cup-winning skipper and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, England midfielder Dele Alli and South Korean sensation Son Heung Min.
Tottenham said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 19): "We are delighted to announce that the first team squad will travel to Singapore and Shanghai as part of our pre-season tour in July in preparation for the 2019/20 season.
"The tour will also enable us to join in the Centennial celebrations of our Global Principal Partner, AIA, whose roots trace back to Shanghai in 1919.
"Our tour to both Singapore and Shanghai will form an important part of the Pan-Asian life insurer's Centennial, with a 12-month programme of special events and activities across its 18 markets in the region having commenced in January.
"The visit also affords the club the opportunity to engage with our millions of fans across Asia including Official Supporters Clubs in both countries in which we will be playing fixtures."

The announcement virtually confirms Spurs will be one of the four teams competing in the International Champions Cup at the National Stadium in July.
Last week, The Straits Times reported that English Premier League clubs Manchester United and Tottenham are all but confirmed for the visit and negotiations are ongoing to add Italy's Juventus and Inter Milan to the line-up.
It is understood that the ICC is set to take place here over the July 19-21 weekend and will feature four teams - one more than in the last two years. But there will be just two games instead of the previous three.
Although the fixtures will be confirmed only on March 27, the new arrangement means the four teams do not need to take a break between matches and the weekend scheduling should attract more fans to the National Stadium.
While Spurs last visited Singapore in 1995, when they lost 4-2 to the Lions on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation, tours to Asia are not new to them. They were in Beijing for the 2009 Premier League Asia Trophy and Hong Kong for the 2013 edition. They also played in Malaysia in 2015, as well as Hong Kong in 2017.
Spurs fan Fabius Chen, a 33-year-old public servant, said: "I was there as a kid in 1995 and it was the first time I watched them in person. My favourite player at the time was Darren Anderton and I have never forgotten Singapore goalkeeper David Lee saving his spot-kick in the shootout.
"I'll be there again in July because as a fan from Singapore, chances to see the team live are few and far between.
"I hope manager Mauricio Pochettino and defender Toby Alderweireld will still be at the club then. I'm also looking forward to seeing a few new faces that can hopefully take the team further next season, a couple of future stars like striker Troy Parrott, and definitely a better result than the last time they were here."

Football: Veteran Quagliarella helps rejuvenated Italy thrash Liechtenstein

PARMA, Italy (REUTERS) - Fabio Quagliarella became Italy's oldest goalscorer as his double helped Roberto Mancini's rejuvenated side thrash 10-man Liechtenstein 6-0 in their second Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday (March 26).
Quagliarella, 36, netted two first-half penalties, while 19-year-old Moise Kean scored his second goal in his third appearance. Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti and Leonardo Pavoletti also found the net.
Liechtenstein were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when Daniel Kaufmann was sent off for a handball on his goalline.
Italy, who have a maximum six points in Group J after a 2-0 win against Finland on Saturday, controlled the midfield through Verratti while Quagliarella set an example with his aggression.
The Azzurri, who are rebuilding under Mancini after missing out on the 2018 World Cup, broke the deadlock after 17 minutes as the 23-year-old Sensi's header from Leonardo Spinazzola's cross from the left found the roof of the net.
Verratti doubled the tally with a fine curled shot into the far side of the goal on 32 minutes.
Quagliarella scored his first goal from the penalty spot after a Nicolas Hasler handball, and his second after Kaufmann also used his arm and was shown a straight red card.
Christian Panucci was Italy's previous oldest goalscorer at 35 years 62 days.
Kean, who had endured a frustrating first half, headed home the fifth on 70 minutes with second-half substitute Pavoletti adding the sixth on his international debut, tapping in after Benjamin Buechel had parried the 30-year-old's header into his path.
Italy next travel to Greece on June 8.

Football: Messi back for Argentina for first time since World Cup

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Lionel Messi was named in the Argentina squad on Thursday (March 7) for the first time since the World Cup, ending a self-imposed eight month exile.
Interim coach Lionel Scaloni named the five-time world player of the year in his squad for this month's friendlies against Venezuela and Morocco.
The 31-year-old Barcelona star hasn't pulled on the light blue and white national team jersey since Argentina were dumped out of the World Cup last June by eventual winners France.
Another long-term absentee, PSG's Angel Di Maria, also makes the squad, but there is no place for other veterans Sergio Aguero - despite his sparkling form for Manchester City - Chelsea's Gonzalo Higuain or Mauro Icardi of Inter.
"The World Cup was a big disappointment for everyone, for him even more so," Scaloni told reporters at Argentina's Ezeiza training center outside Buenos Aires.
"And then in the friendlies he saw us play, he liked it, and he wants to try again, and he's welcome."
Scaloni said "Messi prefers to come than to rest," despite the demands of a heavy fixture list for his club.
"Leo is being called up now, and then we'll see if he plays a match or two - or none. I don't know. That's a decision I'll take."
In all, Messi has missed six friendlies since the World Cup in Russia but many believe he will be an essential part of the team that travels to Brazil for the Copa America, which kicks off June 14.
Whilst he's built up an almost unprecedented collection of trophies with his club, Messi is running out of time to taste major international success with Argentina.
He was on the losing side in major finals three years running from 2014-16, first to Germany in the World Cup in Brazil, then twice to Chile on penalties in the Copa America, including the one-off Centenary edition of the competition.
With 65 goals in 128 appearances, Messi is Argentina's all-time top goalscorer. He's also Barca's top marksman ever with more than twice the number of goals as the next best.
But he's never managed to match his club form when operating on the international stage.
Argentina play Venezuela in Madrid on March 22 and then travel to Tangier four days later to tackle hosts Morocco.

Football: Man City inflict more pain on Man United to go back on top

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Manchester City took a big step towards retaining the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday (April 24) sending them back to the top of the table.
City have 89 points, one more than rivals Liverpool, with both teams having three games to play – and none of them against top six opponents.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain in sixth place with 64 points, outside the Champions League qualification slots as the early promise of the Norwegian’s reign dissipates.
United are surely keen to get this season over with and begin the rebuilding they need – they have now lost seven games out of their last nine in all competitions and were outclassed after the break by City’s composed, intelligent passing and movement.
Second-half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane ensured a comfortable win for City, who have now won 11 straight league games.
The form book suggests City should win the title, much to the frustration of Liverpool who have lost just once this season.
However, City captain Vincent Kompany was not getting carried away.

“Nothing is played out yet. Burnley is a difficult away game next and there is plenty to play for, both for us and Liverpool. We will deal with the other games in the next days,” said the Belgian.
“We need three wins. We cannot expect the opponent to drop points.”
United, smarting from their 4-0 hammering at Everton on Sunday, at least played with aggression and energy in the scoreless first half but created little beyond an optimistic long-range effort from Marcus Rashford.
City were slow to find top gear although the irrepressible Silva tested David De Gea with a thundering drive and Raheem Sterling shot straight at the Spanish keeper after dribbling his way to space inside the box.
Guardiola was forced to adjust his lineup six minutes after the interval when Brazilian holding midfielder Fernandinho went off injured and Sane was introduced.
But it was no surprise that Portuguese winger Bernardo Silva was the man who broke through.
He picked the ball up on the right flank and cut inside on to his left foot, surprising De Gea with a low drive that sneaked in the bottom corner in the 54th minute.
United’s night was summed up when some rare shaky defending from City saw the ball loop towards the back post but Jesse Lingard mis-kicked completely and the opportunity had gone.
City then doubled their lead – Fred giving the ball away in midfield, Sterling breaking forward before feeding Sane on the left with the German’s powerful drive flying in off the outstretched leg of De Gea, who probably should have done better.
“There is a difference in quality. That is why they are top and we are where we are,” said Solskjaer.
“They have set the standard. Living in Manchester we cannot be happy with that. It is up to us to close that gap and overtake them,” he said.

BERLIN • Bayern Munich chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has all but confirmed Niko Kovac's position was safe after the Bundesliga champions secured the domestic double with a 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the German Cup final on Saturday.
The Bayern coach has fought off relentless criticism in his first year in charge of the Bavarian giants, as well as rumours that he would be sacked even if the club did win the league and Cup double.
But their emphatic win over Leipzig appeared to end speculation over the Croat's future, as home fans chanted his name before kick-off and after the final whistle.
Rummenigge, who was considered one of Kovac's strongest boardroom critics this season, also told German broadcaster ARD that parting company with 47-year-old was "never an issue".
He said: "We never questioned whether he would be here next season, that was never a topic for us. At the end of the day, trophies are what is expected at Bayern. The coach plays a central role here."
The German added that while it had been a "curious" term, with the team undergoing several rocky patches during the year and were also convincingly knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 by Liverpool.
However, having played "amazingly" at the Olympiastadion for their 12th double and 19th Cup, the victory was a final vindication for Kovac, whose team overcame a nine-point deficit from rivals Borussia Dortmund to lift the Bundesliga title for a seventh straight time.
Admitting he knew "how difficult the job is", the former Eintracht Frankfurt coach, who paid tribute to the travelling support with a loudspeaker at the full-time whistle, told ARD: "I had to stay calm. Trophies are important.
"I thanked the fans, without them, we would not have made it out of the hole we were in earlier in the season
"Last year, I cried because I was leaving the club (Eintracht). This year, it was a bit less emotional but the emotions are always there."
Kovac is now the first coach to have won the Cup in two successive seasons with two different clubs, having beaten Bayern with his former team in last year's final.
Robert Lewandowski's brace and a late strike from Kingsley Coman sealed the victory and, afterwards, the Poland striker dedicated the trophy to long-serving teammates Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.
The duo will be departing the Allianz Arena in the summer on a free transfer, and Lewandowski told ARD that "they have done so much for the club and we have to thank them".

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery has said Arsenal will be able to sign players only on loan this month.
The Arsenal manager, who has no issue with Aaron Ramsey reportedly close to leaving for Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season, has been linked with moves for Barcelona's Denis Suarez and Sevilla's Ever Banega.
Speaking ahead of today's trip to West Ham, the Spaniard admitted he would have to wheel and deal in the January transfer window as funds were limited.
"We cannot sign permanently," he said. "We can only loan players. I know the club is working on possibilities of which players can help us with big performances like we need now. I cannot say more."
Emery worked with Banega and Suarez at Sevilla and the latter is out of favour at the Nou Camp and would help to solve Arsenal's lack of attacking width.
However, it remains to be seen whether the club can secure a loan for the 25-year-old midfielder, with Barcelona asking for £10 million (S$17.2 million). Sevilla are likely to place an even heftier price on Banega, who has been a key figure for Emery in the past.
"I know this player and he's a very good player," the 47-year-old said.

MAKING ENDS MEET
We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, is counting on youth to meet fixture demands.

The former Sevilla boss also insisted he was not unhappy with Arsenal's financial restrictions.
He added: "We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
"I am very happy. I know it is not easy for us now in this transfer market and, if we can find one player who can help us like we need, with the quality and a different player for getting in our squad, we are going to do it.
"But I am happy with every player today. It is really some injuries that didn't help us in the last matches because we struggled with different injuries with the players... if one or two players can come and help us, that is perfect."
The Gunners' defensive problems have eased for their visit to the London Stadium, with Hector Bellerin, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal all returning to full training earlier this week.
Midfielder Mesut Ozil could also play against Manuel Pellegrini's men, after shaking off the knee injury that has kept him out since Boxing Day.

Football: West Ham midfielder Declan Rice called up to England squad after switching allegiance from Ireland

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham United youngster Declan Rice was named in the England squad on Wednesday (March 13) for this month's European Championship qualifiers just weeks after pledging his allegiance despite having already played for Ireland.
The 20-year-old defensive midfielder, who has made three senior appearances for Ireland, elected last month to make himself available to England manager Gareth Southgate.
His call-up comes in the same week that he was named Ireland's Young Player of the Year.
World governing body Fifa ratified Londoner Rice's switch last week as he had not played a competitive game for Ireland.
"His form warrants it," Southgate told a news conference.
"The situation has been well publicised and we have tracked him for a quite a while.
"When you are asking a player to transfer allegiance, they have to feel they have a future, but also there are no guarantees. But his form has been excellent.
"His character and leadership qualities mean he fits in very well into the way that we work."
The squad also include Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho and Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton who has been recalled after recovering from injury and regaining his place in the Clarets team.
Southgate also gave his backing to Jordan Pickford, saying he hoped the goalkeeper's poor performance for Everton at Newcastle last weekend was "a blip".
He described Pickford's England form as excellent but stopped short of guaranteeing the former Sunderland player would continue as first choice.
Jesse Lingard and Harry Winks were not deemed ready after injuries but Tottenham Hotspur duo Dele Alli and Eric Dier were included having just returned from injury and illness.
England face the Czechs at Wembley on March 22 before travelling to Podgorica to face Montenegro three days later.
