Football: Klopp not underestimating 'world's best side' Man City

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool will need all their fighting qualities to overcome the "best team in the world" Manchester City in Thursday's blockbuster Premier League meeting between the two, manager Juergen Klopp said on Wednesday (Jan 2).
Shortly after City manager Pep Guardiola described table-toppers Liverpool as Europe's best team in his news conference, Klopp returned the compliment with interest and said City could not be taken lightly despite a dip in form.
Defeats by Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester City last month have left Guardiola's side in third place with 47 points, seven points behind unbeaten Liverpool and one behind fellow title contenders Tottenham Hotspur.
"We have to be brave, we have to be full of desire, angry again, all that stuff - like in all the other games - but with the knowledge that the opponent is still the best team in the world," Klopp told a news conference.
"I said it weeks ago because it's 100 percent my opinion; the way they play and all the things they have achieved and the things they will achieve. Nothing has changed, only the points changed, but not the preparation for the game.
"And we are a very, very, very good football team as well. That's why we have the amount of points, that's why we had the results, that's clear. But we prepare for one game."
James Milner missed Liverpool's last two games due to a hamstring injury but the midfielder is in contention to feature against his former side.

"He was back in training with us yesterday for the first time, so we will see," Klopp said.
"His influence on the team is massive... experience is always important if you know how to use it."

Football: Man City go top again, with Silva and Aguero goals in 2-0 win over misfiring Fulham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Top-class goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero took Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League in a 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday (March 30).
City's seventh successive league victory keeps alive their hopes an unprecedented quadruple of League Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies this season.
A wayward ball from Fulham's Timothy Fosu-Mensah gifted the visitors the lead in the fifth minute.
Sergio Aguero intercepted the Dutchman's pass just outside the area and passed to Silva, who cut across past two defenders and drove his left-footed shot into the corner past the diving Sergio Rico in goal.
City manager Pep Guardiola told reporters that Silva was playing so well he had made himself a fixture in the lineup.
"The way he is playing, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch," he said.
Fulham, who were missing top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic after the international break, kept five men in the back line in a bid to keep City's attack at bay, leading to one-way traffic. In the end, the Cottagers were unable to register a single shot on target all game.

The home side's captain Tom Cairney won a freekick on the corner of the box in a rare break forward in the first half that had the home fans clapping and stamping their feet to rattle the century-old Johnny Haynes Stand.
However, Joe Bryan's cross was a whisker too high for Ryan Babel to head cleanly, and the ball went wide.
City's Silva turned provider in the 27th minute, pouncing onto a loose ball and passing to Aguero, who sprang forward past three defenders and shot from a tight angle up into the opposite corner for his league-leading 19th goal of the season.
Caretaker manager Scott Parker's Fulham have now failed to record a win in 14 games against City in all competitions and have lost the last eight in a row.
The result takes City back to the top of the Premier League on 77 points, one ahead of Liverpool who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
"Now it's the last part of the season, seven games left. It's easy: Every game we play we have to win if we want to be champions," Guardiola said.
For Fulham, the outlook is bleak. They remain in 19th place on 17 points, and will now most likely need to win every one of their remaining six matches to have a chance of avoiding relegation.
"We understand the predicament. The main focus now is we push and we end the season on a positive after a difficult campaign," Fulham boss Parker told reporters.
"We have another game on Tuesday and we have to do better. We have six games left and mathematically we're still in it," defender Cyrus Christie said.

Football: Messi penalty helps under-par Barca beat Real Valladolid

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi scored one penalty and missed another as Barcelona beat Real Valladolid 1-0 on Saturday (Feb 16) to open up a seven-point lead at the top of La Liga.
The Catalans played far below their vibrant best but were not troubled by the visitors at the Nou Camp as they ended a run of three consecutive draws in all competitions.
Ousmane Dembele was handed his first start after injury, and loan signing Kevin-Prince Boateng featured for only the second time since joining in January as Ernesto Valverde rested Luis Suarez ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash at Olympique Lyonnais.
Barcelona struggled to create chances against a tight Valladolid defence, only breaking the deadlock when Messi converted a penalty won by Gerard Pique just before halftime for his 22nd league goal of the season.
Messi almost scored his second early in the second half but former Barcelona goalkeeper Jordi Masip pulled off a breathtaking stop to deny La Liga's top scorer from close range.
The Argentine had another chance from the penalty spot in the final stages after substitute Philippe Coutinho was fouled but Masip made another impressive save to deny him.

LONDON • On the finest of margins can matches, and even seasons, turn. Tottenham were labouring against their rivals, seemingly out of ideas against an Arsenal team that led through Aaron Ramsey and had executed manager Unai Emery's game plan to the letter.
Spurs were staring at a third consecutive Premier League defeat and the last time that happened was in 2012.
The implications were grave. Mauricio Pochettino had conceded that the title was out of reach for his team after the losses at Burnley and Chelsea. But another reverse would have imperilled their top-four hopes while simultaneously encouraging Arsenal's.
Then Christian Eriksen floated in a 73rd-minute free kick and everything changed.
Harry Kane was in an offside position but, contentiously, it was not spotted. If the Spurs striker had not been ahead of the line, perhaps Shkodran Mustafi would not have felt the need to barge him.
But he did and when the penalty was awarded, Kane duly scored his ninth goal in nine north London derbies and the match ended 1-1.

  • 9

  • Tottenham's Harry Kane is now the outright leading scorer in Premier League north London derbies, overtaking Emmanuel Adebayor's eight.

"We'd had two disappointing results. It was a perfect game to get back and show the fans we're ready to fight for the rest of the season," the striker said after Spurs notched only their first draw of the season after 29 matches.
"It's a point, obviously we wanted three, but it stops the losing streak."
Spurs had their reprieve following their equaliser. Or did they?

There was still time for another twist with another controversial penalty awarded.
This time, it was for Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the substitute, had the position on Davinson Sanchez and there was some tussling but the Spurs defender did not appear to trip him.
Nonetheless, after going down, Aubameyang found himself standing over a last-gasp kick to win it and give Arsenal a sixth win in seven league games.
However, Hugo Lloris read his intentions and dived to save.
There was more.
When Alex Iwobi crossed from the rebound, Aubameyang looked set to convert from close range - only for Jan Vertonghen to make a last-ditch challenge.
At the very end, another Arsenal substitute, Lucas Torreira, was given a straight red card for a high and out-of-control lunge at Danny Rose.
When the dust settled and the points were shared, Spurs could reflect on having stopped the rot and Arsenal nursed feelings of what might have been.
"If we assess the game, I think we were better than Arsenal," Pochettino said.
"I think it was a fantastic atmosphere for us. I think that after two defeats, it was important today to build up our positive way."
Emery felt that Kane's penalty should not have been given.
"You prepare one match, thinking of the best performance but different situations can happen in 90 minutes," the Arsenal boss said.
"One month ago I said to everybody my opinion: VAR (video assistant referee) is coming to help the referees.
"It's very difficult for the referees. To analyse with the TV is very easy.
"VAR I think will help them, and maybe today's match would be different."

Football: Aubameyang ready to start for Arsenal against Napoli

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal manager Unai Emery says striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be ready to start Thursday's Europa League quarter-final first leg at home to Napoli after illness kept him on the bench for their past two games.
"He had a small problem and has taken antibiotics for his illness," Emery told a news conference on Wednesday (April 10).
"That's the main reason he didn't start those matches. For tomorrow he's getting better and can start or can play after."
Emery is also waiting on late fitness tests for central defender Laurent Koscielny and midfielder Granit Xhaka.
The visit of Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli, a distant second behind Juventus in Serie A, represents a big step up in class for Emery's Arsenal in the competition.
The London club will be desperate to travel to Italy with a positive result from the Emirates, having struggled past BATE and Rennes in the previous rounds after losing the away legs.
"Carlo Ancelotti is top. He has experience in all the competitions, in all the countries. His coaching career is amazing," Emery said.
"This is a big-level match, and the level we want to play. It's a very big test for us."
Striker Alexandre Lacazette said Arsenal must respond after losing to Everton in the Premier League last weekend - a result that left them outside the top four in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League.
"On Sunday we played badly, all the team," he said.
"We didn't do what the coach asked us, but we still have confidence."
Napoli also struggled in their Serie A game at the weekend, drawing 1-1 against Genoa, and Ancelotti said he hopes the result will have served as a wake-up call to his players.
"It was an unexpected performance, which rings alarm bells," he said.
"We'll find things very difficult if we play like that in London. We've not yet spoken in detail about that game. I don't want to talk about a mental dip."

Football: Egypt to host 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

DAKAR (AFP) - Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations between June 15 and July 13, Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad announced in Dakar on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The CAF executive committee preferred Egypt to South Africa as replacements for original hosts Cameroon, who were dropped due to delays in preparations and concerns over security.
It will be the fifth time Egypt stage the biennial showpiece of African football after 1959 - when the country was called the United Arab Republic - 1974, 1986 and 2006.
Egypt only entered the running to host the Cup of Nations when fellow north African country Morocco announced they would not bid to do so.
Morocco were the hot media favourites to replace Cameroon as hosts and Egypt said they "did not want to compete against a fellow Arab nation".
Egypt boast many international-standard venues with the Cairo International Stadium (72,000) and Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria (87,000) boasting the largest capacities.
The choice of Egypt will immediately make them favourites to win a record-extending eighth Cup of Nations this year.

They won three of the four previous tournaments they hosted, failing only in 1974 when they were beaten by Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in the semi-finals.
The star of the current team, Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah, is favourite to retain the African Player of the Year award in Dakar later Tuesday.

Football. Bloody hell! The comeback of all comebacks. Forget what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did as a player on that famous night in 1999, this was a moment like never before. You just don't win from a two-goal home leg defeat. Not in the Champions League. But Manchester United, in the most dramatic of circumstances, did exactly that.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday's (Dec 22) 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley, returning his side to winning ways after two straight defeats.
The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil. He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery's side.
Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes having spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil, who was left out of the team for Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.
Aubameyang's brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the league's top scorer and taking fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.
Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton and they were knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham.
They were given little respite from a highly physical Burnley side but ultimately had too much quality for Sean Dyche's side.
"We expected it to be tough, we prepared the match thinking about what they would do, that they would be strong in the air, so we made sure we won the duels and we also wanted to impose our game plan," Arsenal coach Emery told reporters.
"We could not play as we wanted to for 90 minutes but we are very happy with the victory. Physicality is part of football, you always need to be strong as well as impose your quality, and our victory today is a consequence of this."
Burnley coach Dyche credited his team for causing Arsenal problems, but cursed their own defensive vulnerabilities.
"Overall, I was pleased with the performance, especially the mentality to come here and take on the game," he said.
"A couple of their goals were soft, but attacking-wise we were a problem today for them. We could have got something but we know even with a good performance you can't afford to give away goals like the two we let in."

Football: Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi says he will miss rest of season with ruptured Achilles

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi says he will miss the rest of the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles in Monday's (April 22) 2-2 draw against Burnley.
Hudson-Odoi limped off, helped by two members of Chelsea's medical staff, after sustaining the injury in the first half of the Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.
"Really gutted to end my season with an Ruptured Achilles, gotta work hard and try and come back stronger for next season!!!" Hudson-Odoi tweeted.
Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola admitted he feared the worst when he faced the media before Hudson-Odoi's tweet.
"Hudson: it looks a serious thing. Before I can tell you how serious, we have to wait until tomorrow. But it's not looking good. It's a problem with his Achilles tendon," Zola said.
The 18-year-old's injury is a major blow for Chelsea as they battle to qualify for next season's Champions League either by finishing in the Premier League's top four or winning the Europa League.
They are fourth in the top flight and face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-finals.
Hudson-Odoi has also broken into the England team this year and his injury means he is likely to miss the Nations League semi-finals in June.
His injury completes a roller-coaster season which saw Hudson-Odoi strongly linked with a move to Bayern Munich after growing frustrated at his lack of first-team action with Chelsea.
He eventually convinced Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri to start him in the Premier League towards the end of the season following a pair of impressive displays for England.
Hudson-Odoi's fine performances for Chelsea in recent weeks were one of the few bright spots in a turbulent campaign.
However, Zola expects France midfielder N'Golo Kante to recover quickly from a "contusion" to his ribs that forced him to come off at half-time against Burnley.

Football: Sanchez haunts Arsenal as Man United maintain perfect record under Solskjaer

LONDON (AFP) - Alexis Sanchez came back to haunt Arsenal as the Chilean opened the scoring in Manchester United's 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round win on Friday (Jan 25) to maintain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 100 percent record as caretaker manager.
United's winning run under the Norwegian is now eight games in all competitions and his decision to make five changes was vindicated as both Sanchez and the returning Romelu Lukaku had a huge impact.
Lukaku set up both Sanchez's opener and Jesse Lingard's second for the visitors in a two-minute spell just after the half hour mark.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced Arsenal's arrears just before half-time and the Gunners had plenty of chances to force a replay, but were denied by Sergio Romero as the rested David de Gea was not missed.
Eight minutes from time, United sealed a place in the last 16 when substitute Anthony Martial tucked home the rebound after Petr Cech could only parry Paul Pogba's initial effort.
Sanchez was roundly booed on his first visit to the Emirates since moving to Old Trafford just over a year ago after running down his contract at Arsenal into its final six months.
That move bagged the Chilean a highly lucrative deal, but Sanchez has failed to deliver on that investment with a loss of form and injuries contributing to a return of just four goals in 32 appearances before kick-off.
However, handed just a second start since Solskjaer took charge, Sanchez showed why he was once in such high demand as he latched onto Lukaku's pass before rounding Cech and finishing from a narrow angle for just his second goal of the season.
Solskjaer used Lingard in the middle of a front three with Marcus Rashford and Martial on either side as threats on the counter-attack to great effect in victory at Tottenham a fortnight ago.
A similar tactic with Lukaku and Sanchez this time in the wider areas worked a treat for United's second as Lukaku broke forward before his low cross was expertly dispatched by Lingard.
Arsenal were also exploiting the space in behind Lukaku at will, though, and finally made United pay two minutes before the break.
Aaron Ramsey burrowed into the penalty area and his cross was eventually turned home by Aubameyang after Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira failed to apply a telling touch.
Ramsey is also set to leave Arsenal after failing to reach an agreement over a new deal and the Welsh international again proved what a miss he will be as Romero made a brilliant save from point-blank range to deny him an equaliser early in the second period.
Arsenal's momentum in the search for an equaliser was disrupted by a lengthy delay when captain Laurent Koscielny took an accidental blow to the jaw from Lukaku's boot and had to be replaced.
Having lost Sokratis Papastathopoulos to an early ankle injury, Unai Emery had to patch together a makeshift defence for the final half hour, but still opted to attack by introducing Mesut Ozil.
Arsenal enjoyed the vast majority of possession and territory, but couldn't get the equaliser as Romero again stood tall to parry Lacazette's powerful drive.
Solskjaer introduced Rashford and Martial for the final 18 minutes and the latter delivered the knockout blow to Arsenal by smashing home the third.

Football: Cardiff return a reminder of the challenge facing Man Utd caretaker boss Solskjaer

CARDIFF (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first test as Manchester United's caretaker manager will come in familiar surroundings as the Norwegian returns to Cardiff City on Saturday (Dec 22), hoping to fare better than he did during an ill-fated nine-month spell with the Welsh side in 2014.
Solskjaer's appointment was described as designed to put a smile back on the face of everyone at the club after the confrontational end to Jose Mourinho's two-and-a-half years in charge.
The new man's first act on his return to the club's Carrington training ground was reportedly to gift a bar of Norwegian chocolate to the club's long-serving receptionist - a gesture of the human qualities United know they are getting.
"The smiling assassin sums him up," former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who played with Solskjaer, told the BBC. "He's a lovely fella but Ole will let people know if he's not happy with them." The best way for him to lighten to mood quickly will be with results on the pitch.
A 3-1 defeat by Liverpool last weekend left United 19 points off the league leaders and 11 points adrift of the top four, but Solskjaer can look forward to a relatively forgiving fixture list over the festive period.
After visiting the Cardiff City Stadium, the Red Devils host Huddersfield and Bournemouth before travelling to Newcastle on January 2.
Solskjaer's presence rekindles memories of United's golden age, but also serves as a stark reminder of how far the club have fallen since the retirement of Alex Ferguson in 2013.

In 11 seasons under Ferguson as a predatory striker, Solskjaer scored 126 goals, including the one that famously won the Champions League final in 1999 as part of a treble of major trophies.
Yet, doubts remain over whether Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss until the end of the season is based too strongly on sentimentality than someone with the right mix of motivational and tactical prowess to get United not only competing again in the Premier League, but who can push Paris Saint-Germain in a challenging Champions League last-16 tie.
His time at Cardiff that resulted in just three wins in 18 Premier League games, relegation and being sacked early the next season after a poor start in the Championship does not offer much cause for optimism.
But two spells in charge of Molde in his homeland have been far more successful and Solskjaer also started his managerial career working as United's reserve coach, where he oversaw Paul Pogba among others.
The French World Cup winner's frosty relationship with Mourinho was a major factor in the Portuguese's failure to build on winning the League Cup and Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford.
Pogba has started United's last three Premier League games on the bench, but is expected to return to the starting XI after Solskjaer claimed earlier this year he would "build the team around him".
Solskjaer must also find the right defence to offer David de Gea more protection. The Spaniard has conceded more goals in the Premier League this season (29) in 17 games than the whole of the previous campaign as Mourinho persistently changed his backline to no effect.
In attacking areas, Mourinho's dismissal could also provide a fresh start for Juan Mata and Anthony Martial, while £50 million (S$86.7 million) summer recruit Fred, who did not even make the bench at Anfield last weekend, may now be given the chance to flourish.

LONDON • It was defeat on a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon at Goodison Park that signalled the end for David Moyes at Manchester United. And that was merely a routine 2-0 loss.
This was a humiliating 4-0 Premier League defeat at the start of a supposed new dawn. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has inherited, and is presiding over, a shambles.
United players require a reality check, their latest manager had declared last Friday. It landed heavily on them yesterday as Marco Silva's slick, expansive and clinical team recorded Everton's biggest win over United since October 1984.
The embarrassment for the Old Trafford club was not confined to the scoreline.
It was writ large in the apathetic displays of their over-paid players, in Anthony Martial diving for a non-existent penalty, in David de Gea throwing the ball at a dawdling Diogo Dalot and in the visitors starting with the same central defence as in Moyes' last stand in April 2014.
There they were, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, the latter getting himself injured yet again to add to the sense of chaotic deja-vu.
At least he offered a semblance of commitment that was otherwise absent on an appalling afternoon for United. Champions League qualification is the least of their worries.

  • League goals Manchester United have conceded this season, their most in a top-flight campaign since 1978-79 (63).

A sorry Solskjaer admitted to Sky Sports after the match that his team just did not perform.
"From the first whistle, everything went wrong. I just want to apologise to the fans. They're the only people with the badge on today who can hold their heads high, because we can't," said the Norwegian, whose team have now lost six of their past eight games and five straight away matches for the first time since 1981.
"Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result.
"That was not worthy of a Manchester United team. We hold our hands up and apologise to everyone associated with the club. We have a perfect chance to make amends on Wednesday (against Manchester City)."
Everton were superb and battered the visitors not only physically but also in terms of quality, desire and work rate too.
United, fielding three changes to the side outclassed in Barcelona last week, were truly pathetic. A two-goal deficit at half-time flattered their spineless display.
Their refusal, reluctance or inability to press their opponents contributed to a comfortable first-half stroll for the hosts.
To put it into context, Solskjaer's men ran 8.03km less than Everton in total - the biggest negative difference for United in a Premier League game since defeat by Spurs in August (10.2km less).
Brazilian Richarlison fired the Toffees ahead as early as the 13th minute with an acrobatic high volley. Gylfi Sigurdsson made it 2-0 with a low drive that goalkeeper de Gea was slow to react to.
Lucas Digne then blasted in the third in the 56th minute after de Gea punched out a corner to the French full-back as United struggled to get even a foot in the game.
Icelandic playmaker Sigurdsson then put substitute Theo Walcott through with a clever pass through the legs of Victor Lindelof which the striker confidently converted.
Former United defender Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, blasted the team after the loss.
"I'm furious, the fact that he (Solskjaer) has to go over and apologise to the fans at the whistle is embarrassing," he said.
"There's some bad weeds not only in the garden but Japanese knotweed attacking the entire house and they need it eradicating.
"I have 100 per cent faith in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he needs backing and this performance was rancid. I would imagine the more Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees these players, he will be losing faith in them."
United remain in sixth on 64 points, two behind fifth-placed Chelsea as their top-four hopes suffered a huge blow.
Everton manager Silva said he was happy with a clean sheet and United could surely do with one in their next match.
But that seems improbable now as City, who seem unstoppable in their title run-in, will be visiting Old Trafford relishing a big win on Wednesday.

Football: Fandi Ahmad's Young Lions 'have to keep fighting' to avoid being wooden spoonists

SINGAPORE - The Young Lions are technically Singapore's Under-22 development team but, in reality, the Singapore Premier League (SPL) team are even younger in 2019.
As Fandi Ahmad's team take on Balestier Khalsa in their opening SPL fixture on Saturday (March 2) at the Jalan Besar Stadium, they will have an average age of just 20, with many of them rookies in professional football.
Also, the key players behind their 2018 season have left - Hami Syahin and Taufiq Muqminin both signed for Home United while brothers Irfan (Bangkok Glass, Thailand) and Ikhsan Fandi (Raufoss, Norway) have ventured overseas.
Looking pragmatically at his squad, Fandi feels that last season's creditable seventh-place finish in the nine-team table will be hard to repeat. He said: "Seriously, it will be a very difficult season. I will be very happy if we are not bottom. We just have to keep fighting."
But this is not a gripe from the 56-year-old former national captain. With nine players in the squad born in 2000 and after, he knows the team sorely lack experience.
"I have no complaints. They know the level is very high and I want them to learn fast. They are not used to this level of fitness, they are not used to training at this intensity. We will try to play good, positive football."
But one thing that defines this team is their spirit. As seen during training at Geylang Field on Monday, Fandi and assistant coach S. Subramani drilled the boys' pack mentality, instructing them to press high up the pitch in groups.

Even if this year's cohort is still raw, there are still bright sparks to look out. Attacking midfielder Saifullah Akbar is pacy and creative, Rezza Rezky Ramadhani is a central midfielder with an eye for a through pass while left-back Syahrul Sazali loves to overlap.
Captain Joshua Pereira, 21, said: "It's going to be a tough and long season.
"Apart from the SPL, we have the SEA Games and the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) U-23 Championship qualifiers. It's going to get hectic but we are looking to do well and gain more experience.
"No doubt, it will be tough against all the seasoned SPL players.
"We are a very young team but our team spirit is strong, our fitness is good and we will never stop fighting for each other."
This year's pre-season results have been mixed. While Fandi's team easily brushed aside amateur National Football League sides such as Jungfrau Punggol and Katong, they lost to Malaysia Super League team Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia Premier League side PDRM, among other results.
"Preparation was not the best, it has been difficult to get the whole squad together," he said.
"Many of them have study and NS (national service) commitments, some were taken by other clubs, that's why I am calling up much younger players, who are 17 or 18."
The youngest is Marc Ryan Tan, 17, son of former Lions winger Steven Tan.
And in addition to the SPL, they will fly off to Japan for training and cold-weather acclimatisation next week, ahead of the AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers in Ulaanbaatar from March 22 to 26. The team are drawn in Group G with Hong Kong, North Korea and hosts Mongolia.
In November and December, they will compete at the SEA Games in the Philippines.
And Fandi has called for patience as he begins the tough process of guiding his rookies in their new world of professional football.
He said: "The most important thing is development. After the first few games, the boys will understand the game more. It's a big challenge. Some of them are very raw but I am very happy with their commitment."

New favourites face two stiff tests The challenge is different for Liverpool. A weight of expectation invariably surrounds a club of their size and history, but now the equation has changed.

SINGAPORE - Singapore Premier League club Home United organised a photography exhibition at the MacPherson Community Club (CC) on Saturday (Dec 29), in what was a culmination of a community outreach programme aimed at youths living in MacPherson.
Called My World Through My Lens, the exhibition saw some 50 youths, who are part of the MacPherson Teen Network Club, proudly display photos they had taken during the school holidays.
They had undergone a photography workshop from Dec 14-16 conducted by professional photographer Lee Aik Soon, and were tasked to capture a series of impactful photographs from around the MacPherson area based on four themes: "People and things we value", "What we want to change", "What we want to show the world" and "Portraits".
The exhibition was attended by Ms Tin Pei Ling, Member of Parliament for MacPherson SMC, and Mr Chong Kee Hiong, an MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC and adviser to Home.
Said Home general manager Badri Ghent: "Home United sees this as an excellent opportunity to leverage on photography as a vehicle to drive interest back into the local football fraternity and the community at large.
"It is vital for us to engage youths in Singapore continually, and we acknowledge the strength of photos and social media as a marketing tool.
"We also want to give back to the MacPherson community and MacPherson CC, for their support of our youth academy at Mattar Road."

A spokesman for consumer electronics group Sony, which had backed the programme, said: "Empowering the next generation of photographers has always been a strong focus here in Singapore.
"Youth are the building blocks of every community, and we recognise the importance of giving them the necessary tools and skills for them to grow.
"We are excited to be part of this initiative as it not only exposes youths to a new skill but also gives them a creative platform to showcase their stories and boost the country's photography scene."
Home yesterday also launched the MacPherson Protectors programme for 2019, which aims to engage youths living in MacPherson to attend football training sessions at the Home United Youth Academy (HYFA) at Mattar Road up to twice a week, as a way to ensure they spend their time and energy after school in a productive manner.
