Football: Neymar to resume training on Wednesday after injury

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar will returning to training on Wednesday for "on-pitch tests" after two-and-a-half months out with a foot injury, the club said on Tuesday (April 2).
The world's most expensive player has been sidelined since hobbling off during a French Cup win over Strasbourg on Jan 23, missing PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat by Manchester United.
"@Neymarjr's recovery from injury is progressing well and he will return to training on Wednesday as scheduled for on-pitch tests," PSG said on Twitter.
"Club specialists will carry out a full medical and radiological assessment in two weeks' time."
PSG were hoping Neymar would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final later this month, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
The 27-year-old may be targeting a return for a potential French Cup final on April 27, should PSG get past Nantes in the last four on Wednesday.
Coach Thomas Tuchel said Tuesday that PSG will also be without Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Thomas Meunier against Nantes.

Football: Fulham player Ben Davis defaults on national service commitments

Football: Fulham player Ben Davis defaults on national service commitments

SINGAPORE - Footballer Ben Davis has defaulted on his national service commitments, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said in a statement on Monday (Feb 18).
In response to queries from The Straits Times, Mindef said: "Mr Benjamin Davis is a NS defaulter. He failed to report for NS as required. He is also staying overseas without a valid exit permit.
"Mr Davis has committed offences under the Enlistment Act, and is liable upon conviction to a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years."
ST understands that Davis was required to enlist on Feb 14.
The Phuket-born 18-year-old had signed professional terms with English Premier League club Fulham in July last year, the first Singaporean footballer to do so with a top-tier English club.
A former student at the Singapore Sports School, he left the Republic in 2015 to move to London to join Fulham's academy, where he is registered as an English national.
However, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), which had supported Davis’ application for deferment, expressed its dismay at the news and issued a strongly worded admonition of the player, whom it capped at the Under-19 level. Davis was also called up to the senior national team last year but was not fielded.

A spokesman said: “The FAS is extremely disappointed with Mr Benjamin Davis’ default of his NS obligations. It is thoroughly irresponsible on the part of Mr Davis, and also reneges on his (and his father’s) assurance to the FAS that Mr Davis would discharge his NS commitments and play for the Singapore national team.

“Mr Davis had lived in Singapore for many years, and has benefited from the resources used to educate and train him as a footballer over this period of time. He was invited to play for the Singapore national team, and he agreed.
“The FAS had supported Benjamin Davis’ application to defer NS on this basis.
“While the matter will now be dealt with by Mindef, the FAS wishes to state categorically that we do not condone such conduct nor did it ever arise in our discussions with Mr Davis that he would seek to avoid his liability.”
Davis was born in Thailand to an English father and Thai mother.
After he signed pro terms last year, Mindef confirmed that his application for NS deferment had been rejected as he did not “meet the criteria for long-term deferment from full-time NS”.
The decision sparked a debate among the sporting fraternity and the general public about issues such as maximising sporting talent and the need to maintain Singapore’s security.
A month later in Parliament, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen laid out the reasons for the rejection, highlighting that “there was no commitment to serve Singapore and our national interests” despite Harvey Davis’ contention that if Ben were to become the first Singaporean to play in the EPL, it would “make Singapore proud”.
Dr Ng reiterated that “deferment... cannot be for that individual, no matter how talented, to pursue his own interests or career, even if it vicariously brings credit or fame to Singapore”.
He also noted that Harvey Davis had “consistently refused” to pin down a date when Ben would return to serve NS.
Mindef has also noted that there are programmes in place to help national athletes continue training while serving their NS.
“Many talented sportsmen, including footballers, have completed their NS dutifully first before pursuing their professional careers. Mindef has in place schemes during full-time NS to enable them to continue training to retain and improve their skills,” it said last July.
“We also provide additional training opportunities in the lead-up to major Games such as the South-east Asian and Olympic Games where our sportsmen represent Singapore and do us proud.”
In the last 15 years, only three athletes – swimmers Joseph Schooling and Quah Zheng Wen, and sailor Maximillian Soh – have been granted deferment. Schooling and Quah have represented the Republic at various Olympics, with the former making history by winning a gold medal in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Games.
While Davis had a strong start in his first season with the Fulham U-18 team - he scored once in 10 games, making 13 tackles and 16 interceptions while racking up a pass accuracy of 90 per cent - ST understands he has found the going tougher in his sophomore season.
A source, who did not want to be named, said that Davis' performance was adversely affected after news emerged that his application for NS deferment had been rejected.
While he started 12 of Fulham U-18s’ first 14 matches of the season, he has played only 136 out of a possible 630 minutes in their last seven games. He also earned the call-up to the Under-21 team for four games, but was an unused substitute on each of those occasions.
Based on a sentencing framework introduced by the High Court in July 2017, there are four bands of sentencing based on the length of the period of default:
- For those who evade NS for two to six years, the starting point is two to four months' jail
- For seven to 10 years, the starting point is five to eight months' jail
- For 11 to 16 years, the starting point is 14 to 22 months' jail
- For 17 to 23 years or more, the starting point is two to three years' jail.
NS defaulters who are still under the age of 40 are still required to serve if they return.
A defaulter’s sentence may be discounted based on various factors, such as the length of period of default, how substantial his connection to Singapore is, whether he voluntarily surrendered or was arrested, and whether he pleaded guilty or claimed trial.

Correction note: This article has been updated to reflect the four-band sentencing based on the length of the period of NS default.

Football: Offside call leaves Burnley to settle for draw at Watford

Football: Offside call leaves Burnley to settle for draw at Watford

LONDON (REUTERS) - Lowly Burnley made it four games unbeaten in the Premier League with a 0-0 draw at seventh-placed Watford on Saturday (Jan 19).
But the Clarets were left frustrated after a stoppage-time effort by striker Chris Wood was deemed narrowly offside.
Watford came out of the blocks strongest and Gerard Deulofeu twice went close early on, with one effort superbly saved by Tom Heaton before James Tarkowski cleared a shot off the line.
Heaton, who has been in fine form since replacing Joe Hart in goal earlier this month, was at his very best to deny Troy Deeney just before the break but the momentum gradually moved to the visitors.
Burnley had several chances to win but Ashley Barnes and Dwight McNeil missed great opportunities for Sean Dyche's side and Watford keeper Ben Foster was in sharp form.
The Clarets, who had won their last three games, are on 22 points in 16th place, three points above the relegation zone.
Dyche was unhappy that his team had missed out on two potentially vital points, and questioned whether the disallowed effort from New Zealander Wood was offside.
"I didn't think it was (offside) at the time, and looking back, I don't think it was now and I'd be surprised if the majority didn't think it was onside," said Dyche.
"We had three or four golden chances and it was a good performance. The energy and the edge we play with as a group is coming back but those extra two points would have been very welcome. Unfortunately a big decision has gone against us," added the former Watford manager.
Current Hornets boss Javi Gracia declined to comment on the offside decision but praised both goalkeepers for their displays.
"I think today it wasn't our best game but it was positive to get a point. We tried to win the game and were looking for different options to attack," said the Spaniard.
"We created chances with Deulofeu at the beginning of the game, and we created two more in the first half but I think the goalkeepers were everywhere today," he said.

Football: Ronaldo hat-trick fires Juventus into Champions League quarter-finals

TURIN, Italy (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo shot Juventus into the Champions League last eight on Tuesday (March 12) with a hat-trick that saw his side overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid with a thrilling 3-0 win in Turin.
The Portuguese struck either side of half-time to level the aggregate scores before crashing home the decisive penalty kick four minutes from the end.
Ronaldo was signed from Real Madrid in order to help Juve turn domestic dominance into European success and he pulled off his most important display for the Serie A club since arriving in pre-season with his team with their backs to the wall following their 2-0 defeat in Madrid last month.
The 34-year-old rose to head home Federico Bernardeschi's 27th-minute cross to get the ball rolling before repeating the trick with Joao Cancelo's swinging ball two minutes after the break to get the Allianz Stadium roaring with belief.
With the tie delicately poised he stepped up to score the winning goal of a pulsating tie from the spot after Bernardeschi was brought down by Angel Correa, keeping alive Juve's hopes of a first Champions League title since 1996.

Football: Do teams still need iconic captains now?

Football: Do teams still need iconic captains now?

LONDON • About a decade ago, The Wall Street Journal writer Sam Walker had the idea of trying to identify the most objectively great teams in sporting history, and seeing if he could discern any common traits.
He found they all shared a single characteristic - for every team, the duration of their success coincided with the lifespan of a captain, who could elevate a team to perform beyond the level of their natural ability, from Hungary's Ferenc Puskas to Carles Puyol of Barcelona.
In short, he theorised the one thing the greatest teams have in common is great player leadership.
Walker's findings provide an interesting counterpoint to an inconspicuous but intriguing trend of this Premier League season.
At many teams, the club captain has been an impermanent or peripheral figure.
Gary Cahill has barely played for Chelsea, likewise, Everton's Phil Jagielka, and Southampton's Steven Davis, now on loan to Rangers.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE
You don't always need vocal captains... You can lead by example as a creative player. If the likes of Hazard or Silva are picked as captains, for me, that's a sign that those guys should be able to inspire the team.
NIGEL WINTERBURN, former Arsenal defender, on how individualistic attacking players can break the archetype of the vocal and defensive captain.

Manchester United's Antonio Valencia and Manchester City's Vincent Kompany have started five and six league games respectively.
Seven clubs (Arsenal, the Toffees, Fulham, City, United, Newcastle and the Saints) have had four or more captains this term.
All of which begs a question: Is the ever-present, totemic captain an endangered species? And does it matter?
The first thing to point out is that there does not appear to be an obvious correlation between consistency of captain and success based on the small sample of this league season.
City do not appear to have suffered for rotating the armband.
In fact, it is easy to disparage the importance attached to captaincy as old-fashioned - a peculiarly English hang-up.

When pundits - usually from the generations of retired former players - bemoan the lack of leaders in modern football, it feels like they are often harking back to that monolithic figure of English folklore.
The blood-soaked Terry Butcher, or Captain Marvel Bryan Robson, or John Terry or Tony Adams shouting and pointing fingers.
But Nigel Winterburn, who played under Adams at Arsenal, says that the presence of an old-school skipper in the ranks was not something he or his teammates considered a particularly important factor in their success.
"It didn't give us anything extra," the former England defender says.
"I never really worried who was captain, it didn't interest me."
When Winterburn moved to West Ham, the captaincy was less consistent unlike at Highbury, yet he "didn't personally notice the difference".
Is the lionisation of a single captain out of step with the reality of modern football then, a prehistoric obsession in an era of advanced analytics and player rotation?
As Michael Cox pointed out in an article for ESPN on Arsenal's perceived lack of leaders in 2016, every generation thinks it had better leaders.
As early as 1938, then Gunners boss Herbert Chapman was lamenting: "Football today lacks the personalities of 20 or 30 years ago."
A lack of leadership is often a retrofitted criticism applied to underperforming teams, while teams that succeed, despite lacking archetypal leaders, escape censure.
However, it would be wrong to say the idea of captaincy is something that is incompatible with the analytical side of modern football.
It is possible that the cult of the captain has seemingly declined in parallel with the rise of the cult of the coach.
The advent of meticulous micromanagers such as City's Pep Guardiola and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, whose coaching depends in large part on intensively rehearsing movements and systems, ensures their teams are never unsure of what to do in any phase of the game.
It seems there has also been a change in the type of player considered for the captaincy.
In the past, that office was usually the preserve of vocal, charismatic, defensive players.
But a new breed of captain has begun to emerge. This season, Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, David Silva at City and Fulham's Tom Cairney have worn the armband in the league.
These are all attacking players, most of the individualistic variety, none especially loud.
But Winterburn, who was captained by Joe Cole in his final season at West Ham, believes they can do the job.
"You don't always need vocal captains," he says. "You can lead by example as a creative player. If the likes of (Chelsea's Eden) Hazard or Silva are picked as captains, for me, that's a sign that those guys should be able to inspire the team."
While Winterburn still prefers the single-captain model, he adds, "There should be 11 captains out there."
It seems that is the way we are heading but by rotating the captaincy, are you multiplying leadership or spreading it more thinly?
Therein lies the paradox - with 59 players and counting having skippered a league team this season, is captaincy in decline? Or is it in fashion?

Football: Man City go top of the EPL with win at Everton, Guardiola says result 'is a lesson to never give up'

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Champions Manchester City went top of the Premier League with a disciplined 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday (Feb 6) that saw them leapfrog title rivals Liverpool on goal difference.
Aymeric Laporte headed the opener just before the interval and substitute Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory deep in stoppage time for City, who returned to the league's summit for the first time since Dec 8.
Both City and Liverpool have 62 points, but Pep Guardiola's side have played one game more than the Merseysiders, who have drawn their last two encounters and host Bournemouth on Saturday.
With Tottenham Hotspur on 57 points, the title race has turned into a genuine three-way tussle and while City rarely sparkled against Everton, it was a key win in a busy week in which they had already beaten Arsenal and host Chelsea on Sunday.
"Four or five days ago, we could have been seven points behind, it is a lesson to never give up," said Guardiola.
"Now we have an incredible test on Sunday against Chelsea. I don't know how far we will get, maybe we will die in the road, but we are trying.
"We have played one more game than Liverpool, it's good to be top but Liverpool (still) has a game at Old Trafford," he added, referring to Liverpool's match at Manchester United on Feb 24.
The game against Everton was a re-arranged fixture caused by City's advance to the League Cup final and highlighted the difficulties to come for a side still involved in four competitions as there were some signs of weariness in their display.
Everton manager Marco Silva left two of his main creative players, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison, on the bench and opted for three central midfielders - a tactic that worked well as his side closed down City and limited their control of possession.
Yet after all that good work, it was Everton's sloppiness at set-pieces which cost them yet again.
David Silva curled in a free kick from the left and Laporte was somehow left unattended to head home from close range.
The goal was the 17th conceded by Everton from a set-piece in all competitions this season - prompting further questions about Silva's insistence on zonal marking.
After the break, ninth-placed Everton, who had been well beaten at home by Wolves on Saturday, stuck at their task well, but for all their graft, they rarely threatened City's lead.
The home side did get a sniff of an opening when Kyle Walker, deep in his own half, gave the ball away to substitute Richarlison, but the Brazilian's pass towards Cenk Tosun was over-hit and the danger passed.
It was a sign of City's strength in depth that their substitutes combined for the second goal deep in stoppage time with Kevin De Bruyne playing Jesus in on goal.
Although the Brazilian's shot was blocked by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, he reacted quickly to head home the loose ball.
"Everyone (helped) win the game," said Jesus. "We know that it is going to be difficult. We want to play well in every game and at the end of the season we want the title," he said.

Football: Zidane enjoys winning start but Atletico beaten in Bilbao

MADRID (AFP) - Zinedine Zidane brought Real Madrid's outcasts in from the cold and they repaid him with a win over Celta Vigo on Saturday (March 16) but La Liga's title race could well be over after Atletico Madrid were beaten by Athletic Bilbao.
Isco and Gareth Bale each scored in Madrid's 2-0 victory over Celta before Atletico lost 2-0 at San Mames, giving Barcelona the chance to go 10 points clear if they overcome Real Betis on Sunday.
Barca's superiority has been clear for some time but Zidane's new era is up and running. Isco, who had not started a single league game under Santiago Solari, gave Real the lead shortly after the hour and Bale got the goal his own committed display deserved to put sorry Celta out of sight.
Bale was teed up by Marcelo, who was also dropped by Solari but recalled, while Keylor Navas pulled off a superb save in the first half, having been brought back in ahead of Thibaut Courtois.
"Nobody can erase what these players have done," Zidane about those players he recalled. "I will count on everyone."
The victory ends a run of four consecutive home defeats for Madrid and means they are now two points behind Atletico, nine back on Barca.
That deficit will surely prove too big to close but Zidane's job was to restore morale in the 11 league games that are left and to find out what, and who, needs changing in the summer.

"My team-talk was really simple," Zidane said.
"I told them to have fun, to play, to run together and to be united when we don't have the ball. When we have it, let's have fun, and that's what we did."
At times, it felt like a pre-season fixture, not just because of the baking hot sun but the relaxed atmosphere and the sense this is now a team on trial.
Bale, whose relationship with Zidane deteriorated to breaking point last season, was arguably the biggest winner, his performance proving there could yet be a place for him in what the club's president Florentino Perez has dubbed "the glorious new era".
Marcelo impressed too while Courtois might well wonder what his next couple of months hold, given Navas, an old favourite of Zidane, looks to be back in favour.
"There are 10 games left, today Keylor played, on another day it could be Thibaut," Zidane said.
"Real Madrid needs two or three great goalkeepers. We'll see what happens next year."

BALE RATTLES CROSSBAR

There was a cosy feeling at the Santiago Bernabeu, where fans had a new song to the tune of Hey Jude, replaced by Zizou, and cheered their new coach's name when it was announced before kick-off.
Bale came closest to scoring in the first half with an acrobatic scissor-kick that crashed against the crossbar and later teed up Karim Benzema to tap in, only for the referee to book the Welshman for a foul in the build-up.
Celta found chances on the break but never looked liked converting. Maxi Gomez, with only Ramos to beat, curled wide while Sofiane Boufal's finish had to be blocked on the line by Marcelo as Madrid were again caught upfield.
Benzema's goal was ruled out just before half-time and Luka Modric had one chalked off just after, this time VAR intervening to show Raphael Varane offside and close enough to be deemed active.
Isco's influence had diminished and Dani Ceballos was ready to replace him just before he scored the opening goal. Asensio made it, a superb run allowing Benzema to cross and Isco to bundle in.
There was still time for Bale to add a second, his touch making space for the shot after Marcelo had slipped him clear. The ball hit the post and then the net.
After going out of the Champions League to Juventus on Tuesday, Atletico's miserable week continued as they were undone by two late goals in Bilbao.
Jose Gimenez was at fault for the opener, gifting the ball to Inigo Cordoba who found Inaki Williams at the back post. Gimenez was unfortunate for the second too, as Kenan Kodro's shot deflected off his foot on its way in, leaving Barcelona with one hand on the trophy.

Football: Neymar leaving foot injury up to God

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AFP) - Brazilian football star Neymar said on his Instagram feed on Thursday (Jan 24) that he was leaving everything in God's hands after his club Paris Saint-Germain announced he had suffered fresh injury to his right foot.
"Your will be done, God," the forward wrote, next to a photo of one of his tattoos on which it is written on his thigh: "1% luck, 99% faith."
Neymar is a devout evangelical Christian.
His club said the injury sustained on Wednesday in a French Cup match against Strasbourg was to his fifth metatarsal, which was already fractured last season.
The extent of the problem this time was not yet known.
Neymar added no details on his social media post.
Tests in the coming days will reveal how serious it is.

But the recurrence comes three weeks before PSG play Manchester United in the Champions League.
It is also a worry for the Selecao as Brazil host the Copa America between June 14 and July 7.

Football: Hougang United out to avenge March 3 thrashing by Tampines Rovers in SPL

SINGAPORE - What a difference two months can make. On March 3, Tampines Rovers and Hougang United lined up in a lip-smacking opener to the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, touted as a clash between potential title rivals.
Tampines trotted off the pitch at the Jalan Besar Stadium with a handsome 5-1 win, aided by a red card to Hougang's Justin Hui, which preceded the Stags' four second-half goals.
Since then, however, the two teams have had contrasting fortunes in the SPL.
Hougang have won five of their seven games and currently sit second. Tampines, meanwhile, have not won any of their last four league matches and are fourth in the nine-team SPL.
As the teams prepare to meet again on Sunday (May 5) at Our Tampines Hub, Hougang are eager to prove that the first result between the two sides this season was one off.
"We all know Tampines are a good team, there's no denying that," said star attacker Faris Ramli, who has scored six SPL goals this season.
"But we all know the 5-1 scoreline did not reflect the game. We suffered a red card at 1-0 down and they made use of the extra player to score more.

"The fact we managed to equalise (to 1-1) with 10 men shows we have the quality to match them."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee was also keen to downplay the thrashing earlier this term.
"In terms of whether the scoreline reflected the quality of both teams, I think it didn't," said Lee.
"Both sides have good sets of players, but on that day and in that game, we were the better team and they didn't perform, and when those two factors come together, that (big win) can happen.
"Are we expecting a similar scoreline on Sunday? No. They'll definitely be fired up to prove the previous result was a fluke."
On Tampines' recent struggles in the league, Lee said the team's exertions in the AFC Cup - games usually take place in mid-week - have affected their consistency. Most recently, the Stags needed a last-minute goal to beat Myanmarese champions Yangon United, at Jalan Besar on Wednesday (May 1).
The 28-year-old acknowledged that the continental competition is "not easy physically" on his players as the matches are played at "an international tempo".
Lee added: "We've spoken about it as a team and we know it's part of the privilege of playing in a continental tournament... Whether (fatigue) will play a big part on Sunday, I don't know.
"But we've done our usual recovery protocols and hope the players are fresh, and physically and tactically ready."
Despite their good run of form, Hougang are looking to avoid a second loss on the trot, following their gutwrenching 3-2 defeat in injury time to league leaders Brunei DPMM last Sunday. The Cheetahs had led 2-1, and a win would have taken them top of the SPL.
"The loss was a hard pill to swallow, but we've addressed it as a team and we are in better spirits now," said Faris.
"This season, we have shown we have the mental strength to bounce back from our two (previous) losses by winning the next game both times, and we will have to do it again.
"We have shown we are capable of competing at the top of the SPL, so this is a game we definitely want to take three points from."

Talking points from the Premier League

1 FULL-STRENGTH CITY

Manchester City did not have to extend themselves in the 2-0 win over Fulham and it pleased manager Pep Guardiola that Kevin de Bruyne (strolled through his first start since March 2.
De Bruyne's season has been disrupted by injuries but his return from a hamstring problem has come at a good time for Guardiola, who also had the vital Fernandinho available for the first time since February.
City's squad are looking strong for their quadruple hunt.

2 NOT LONG LEFT FOR SARRI

Chelsea managers have endured spells of dissent from those in the stands, and on the pitch, open revolt and dreadful results.
But no head coach has endured as prolonged a mutiny as Maurizio Sarri. His team may have won 2-1 at Cardiff to avoid a fifth defeat in six away games, but there were few signs of progress.
Had they lost this match, Sarri's position would surely have been untenable. As it is, he limps into tomorrow's meeting with Brighton. It is hard to see a second term of the Sarri project.

Huddersfield manager Jan Siewert admits a detailed inquest is needed after a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace confirmed their record-equalling relegation.
The Terriers are one of two Premier League teams, along with Derby in 2008, to lose their top-flight status in March, picking up just 14 points from 32 games.

Football: Singaporean coach Akbar Nawas leads Chennai City to first I-League title in India

SINGAPORE - When Akbar Nawas took over as head coach of Chennai City last year, the Indian football club had only three games to stave off relegation from the I-League.
They beat Churchill Brothers 3-1, lost 7-1 to East Bengal, before securing safety with a 2-1 win over Minerva Punjab in their final match.
A year later, former Tampines Rovers coach Akbar, assisted by ex-Hougang United coach and fellow Singaporean K. Balagumaran, helped Chennai complete a remarkable turnaround after Saturday's (March 9) come-from-behind 3-1 win over Minerva at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Tamil Nadu sealed a first league title for both club and coach.
With 13 wins, four draws and three defeats, they amassed 43 points, one ahead of second-placed East Bengal.
It is believed that the duo are the first Singaporean coaches to win a professional football league title outside of South-east Asia.
And they did it in swashbuckling style, scoring 48 goals in 20 matches, and never relinquishing their place at the top of the 11-team league from the third match week.
The Times of India summarised their triumph as "befitting their dominant campaign, the fulcrum of which was a sustained possession-based football".

Akbar, 43, told The Straits Times: "It is a great satisfaction after accepting the challenge of taking over a relegation-threatened team, and then winning the league within a year.
"Our team perform best when we are chasing the game. Thus, we didn't panic when we were behind (against Minerva on Saturday). I told the team we must end every attack with a chance at goal. I was pretty confident we could bounce back and win like we had done before."

His sidekick Balagumaran, 54, added: "It is so overwhelming, I don't know if we are still in a dream.
"When we got here, the players we had were not from football academies, they were from the streets and so unpolished.
"Many of them are playing in their first professional season and now they have won their first professional league title.
"Personally, it is also the highlight of my career, but I hope there is more to come, and I also hope this opens the door for more Singaporean coaches to venture abroad."
With the league win, Chennai are eligible for the 2020 AFC Champions League qualifiers.

Football: Bayern demolish Dortmund 5-0 to reclaim Bundesliga top spot

MUNICH, Germany (REUTERS) - Champions Bayern Munich dismantled Bundesliga title rivals Borussia Dortmund 5-0 on Saturday (April 6), scoring four goals in a flawless first half to reclaim top spot and get back on course for a record-extending seventh straight league crown.
The Bavarians exploded into action and scored twice in the opening 17 minutes through Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski, adding two more from Javi Martinez and Serge Gnabry before the interval.
Lewandowski's strike meant the Polish forward became only the fifth player in Bundesliga history to reach the 200-goal mark and the first foreigner to do so.
The hosts, who drew 1-1 at Freiburg last week, stepped off the gas after the break and controlled the game before Lewandowski scored again in the 89th minute and Bayern moved up to 64 points with six matches remaining, one point clear of Dortmund.
The first chance, however, fell to Dortmund with Mo Dahoud hitting the post after a lightning quick break.
But that was the last Dortmund attack for a long time, with a glancing header by Hummels putting the host ahead in the 10th minute and highlighting their aerial superiority.
Things got worse for Dortmund when Dan-Axel Zagadou's backpass fell to Lewandowski in the 17th and the Bundesliga's leading scorer chipped it over keeper Roman Buerki and volleyed in.

Poland's Lewandowski, who has scored 21 in the league this season, was the first player to break the 200-goal milestone since 1987.
Buerki had to rescue his team again when Hummels and Lewandowski beat the Dortmund defenders in the air.
The keeper denied Thomas Mueller from close range in the 41st minute but could do nothing to stop Martinez's rebound that put the hosts 3-0 up.
Gnabry added another to kill off any hopes of a comeback by Dortmund, who badly missed their injured top scorer Paco Alcacer.
Lewandowski notched his 21st goal of the season and 201st in the Bundesliga to put the cherry on top of a big win for Bayern which made them title favourites once more.

Pogba's brother blames Mourinho for star's slump at United

LONDON • Paul Pogba's brother Mathias Pogba has hit out at Jose Mourinho over the Portuguese's treatment of the Manchester United midfielder.
The 28-year-old, who plays for Tours in France's third division, did not hold back in his criticism of the former United manager during an interview with RMC Sport.
Mourinho fell out with Pogba on a number of occasions during his 21/2-year spell in charge of United.
He questioned Pogba's work rate and attitude in public and also at one point chastised the Frenchman in front of cameras at the club's Carrington training ground.
"It was Mourinho who was the problem," said Mathias, who is three years older than his World Cup-winning brother.
"Mourinho still wants to be the centre of attention. The problem was Mourinho, right down the line. In the locker room, outside the locker room... Everything.
"He always wants to be the maestro, the centre of attention. Paul does not even calculate that aspect: you respect him, he will respect you, you trust him, he will produce big performances."
Mourinho left Pogba out of the United team for the final three matches of his tenure. The 55-year-old was sacked on Dec 18.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then immediately recalled Pogba to the starting XI after being named caretaker manager for the rest of the season and the Frenchman has responded by scoring four goals in four games.
The former Juventus midfielder missed last Saturday's FA Cup third-round win over Reading because of a leg injury he suffered in the Premier League victory over Newcastle United.
He had to have treatment on the injury over the weekend, meaning he was unable to fly out with the rest of the squad to Dubai last Saturday for their warm-weather training camp.
He joined up with his teammates on Monday and took part in training on Tuesday, suggesting that he will be fit for Sunday's league game away to Tottenham Hotspur.
Chris Smalling is a doubt because of a foot injury and fellow defender Marcos Rojo has been sent back to England after experiencing yet more problems in his recovery from a knee injury.
Midfielder Fred has been given permission to miss the five-day camp because his partner is expecting a baby.
Solskjaer has encouraged his players to forge a competitive spirit in training and does not mind if tempers fray from time to time.
Referencing his own playing days, the Norwegian said: "We had one or two fights, but that is just the demand, the standards that you set.
"If the session ends with a little bit of a quarrel, I don't mind that because it means they are winners, they want to improve. If you settle for losing in training, you'll lose in a game when it really matters."
The 45-year-old is also unfazed by the prospect of facing Spurs, who beat United 3-0 in the reverse fixture in August.
"It'll be tough, but we can make it tough for them," he said.

Leicester axe Puel, target Rodgers as successor

Leicester axe Puel, target Rodgers as successor

LONDON • Leicester City yesterday sacked manager Claude Puel after their 4-1 Premier League home thrashing by Crystal Palace on Saturday and want to appoint Celtic's Brendan Rodgers as his successor.
The club are expected to make an immediate attempt to lure the Ulsterman, but are prepared to wait until the summer for the former Liverpool boss.
It is uncertain whether Rodgers would want to leave Celtic mid-season when he has the chance to win an unprecedented third treble in three seasons at Parkhead.
They could also consider Newcastle's Rafael Benitez, whose contract expires in June, but they have made Rodgers their first-choice target after some months of succession planning.
While the hope had been that Puel could continue until the end of this season, the heavy defeat prompted the club's hierarchy to act, dispensing with their third manager in 23 months.
It was the team's fourth straight loss at the King Power Stadium, and they have been beaten six times and held once in seven games since New Year's Day.

  • 6

Losses out of seven games (1D, 6L) Leicester have suffered under Claude Puel's watch since New Year's Day.

The 57-year-old Frenchman took over from Craig Shakespeare in October 2017 on a three-year deal and the club finished ninth in his first season.
An official statement read: "The club would like to thank Claude for his efforts in leading the team during his 16 months in the role and wish him well in his future career."
Jacky Bonnevay, Puel's assistant, has also left, with first-team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler placed in temporary charge, while "the club begins the process of appointing a new manager".
The Foxes may try to bring in an interim manager if they get signals from Rodgers that he is willing to take over in the summer.
Earlier this month, Peter Schmeichel, father of Leicester goalkeeper Kasper, said the club did not have a manager capable of getting the best out of the players and indicated that his son might be looking to move on.
Jamie Vardy had also been critical of Puel's style of play this term and, while the Frenchman claimed there was no rift with the forward, British media reports suggested otherwise.
The 2016 league champions are 12th in the table and their season was marked by tragedy in October when then owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four other people were killed in a helicopter crash.
Their next game is a league trip to 16th-placed Brighton tomorrow.
