Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's honeymoon continues

LONDON • Paul Pogba took another swipe at Jose Mourinho on Sunday by thanking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for giving him the attacking freedom to enjoy his football again.
The France midfielder created the only goal of the game for Marcus Rashford with a wonderful pass as Manchester United extended their remarkable run under their interim manager with a 1-0 Premier League away win over Tottenham.
Solskjaer now has six straight wins - the best start of any United manager - and their turnaround since Mourinho's firing has coincided with a series of match-winning displays from Pogba, who has been given a licence to roam "like Frank Lampard".
Declaring after their Spurs victory he was now "always smiling" as "it was a pleasure to play again", he told reporters: "Before the coach arrived, I was in the shadows, on the bench, and I accepted that.
"I am enjoying playing my football now. I like to be more attacking, I had to defend too much before and that is not my best attribute. This is my position. The manager tells me to get into the box and score goals.
"Everything comes when you are free and you have the trust of the manager and the players, so they make it easier for me as well.
"I know (Nemanja) Matic is there. I know we can press high and, when we get the ball, I can shoot, I can pass and that's what we have been doing since the new manager came in. I have security behind me and have freedom to go, so it helps me."
And if Wembley was an audition for the permanent United role, Solskjaer is surely closer to a callback at the Theatre of Dreams after impressing against Mauricio Pochettino, the man widely tipped as the front runner.
He demonstrated his ability to do the job long term and showed there is science behind the smiles, displaying acuity by exploiting Spurs' vulnerability out wide when they start with a midfield diamond.
Pogba lauded Solskjaer's tactics, insisting he deserved equal credit for the pass that teed up Rashford, saying: "It's a great ball but we've been training for this all week because we knew this was the weakness of Tottenham.
"When they attack one side, they get very high and we need to attack on the opposite side. We knew we could hurt them in this way and we worked on it."
Pochettino abandoned the shape in the second half, switching to a 4-2-3-1, and Solskjaer could not check the shift in momentum, with only the excellence of David de Gea preventing Spurs from not just levelling but winning.

  • Consecutive wins Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has guided Manchester United to, the best of any new manager at the helm of the 20-time English champions.

The Spain No. 1, who later sounded a warning to the rest of the league that they were now seeing "the real United", made 11 saves after the break - more than any other goalkeeper has made in 90 minutes this term - to deny Spurs, and Solskjaer felt he could be the greatest to put on gloves at Old Trafford.
He said: "We've had some great 'keepers at this club and he's challenging both Edwin (van der Sar) and Peter (Schmeichel) for the No. 1 spot historically."
The Norwegian also insisted afterwards the win would have no bearing on his future despite the presence of most of United's power brokers, including executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, former chief executive David Gill and former manager Alex Ferguson in London.
"This game was never about me and him," Solskjaer said of his Argentinian counterpart. "For us, it's three points. We had to beat them today so we had a chance to catch them. Seven points is catchable, 13 would have been impossible.
"I'm just doing my job until my contract runs out at the end of June. The win was massive. Results like this give you confidence."
While de Gea thwarted Spurs' bid to record a first league double over United since the 1989-1990 season, Pochettino showed little sign of disappointment, lauding his side for "one of the best performances that I saw since I've been here and the best 45 minutes (after half-time)".

Game of many returns for Gunners

LONDON • Arsenal manager Unai Emery will face a familiar foe when the Gunners look to move a step closer to Europa League glory at Rennes today.
French midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa endured an unhappy two years under Emery at Paris Saint-Germain where he was frozen out for an entire season and made to train with the club's reserves.
However, his mercurial talent has now helped Ligue 1 side Rennes reach the last 16 of an European competition for the first time.
At 31, Ben Arfa has relaunched his career in the more modest surroundings of Roazhon Park and will aim to inflict revenge upon Emery today.
Rennes may lie 10th in Ligue 1, but shocked a highly fancied Real Betis in the last 32 with a thrilling 6-4 aggregate win.
"We know it'll be a level up against such a club," said Rennes midfielder Benjamin Andre.
"Arsenal is a name that resonates throughout Europe. They will obviously be the big favourites."

Arsenal's struggles on the road in Emery's first season in charge should give the French side reason to believe. The Gunners have won just once away from home since November, suffering an embarrassing 1-0 defeat by Bate Borisov in the last 32 before turning the tie around at the Emirates.

French international Alexandre Lacazette will miss out on a return to his homeland as he is suspended, but there will be a homecoming of another sort for Petr Cech, who spent two years at Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2004.
The Blues, meanwhile, are aiming to win the competition for a second time in six years starting against Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge, with Maurizio Sarri having seemingly bounced back from the brink of losing his job.
London derby victories over Tottenham and Fulham have given the Italian breathing space after a 6-0 Premier League thrashing by Manchester City and then seeing his authority questioned by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga's refusal to be substituted in the League Cup final.
Sarri's fate, though, will likely depend on sealing a return to Champions League football next season and winning the Europa League may yet prove the best means to that end with Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea fighting for the final two places in the Premier League's top four.
Off the pitch, Fifa confirmed on Tuesday that Chelsea have appealed against a transfer ban imposed after they were found guilty of breaching rules on recruiting 29 foreign players under the age of 18.
The Blues, banned from the next two transfer windows and also fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$810,850), had already said they would appeal against the decision taken by Fifa's disciplinary committee last month.
Fifa said in a statement that it could neither offer a schedule for the process, nor whether the ban would be lifted pending the hearing.

I do agree and have said so in many posts, the lack of control over the games is a major cause of our defensive problems. But even after that, individually the back line is not good enough. 1 vs 1, playing from the back, tracking runners, tackling the ball off the opp or generally dealing with technical players…etc All are glaring problems.

Emery aims to restore Gunners' confidence
LONDON • Arsenal must be optimistic and recover their confidence ahead of today's trip to Leicester after losing three of their last four Premier League games, manager Unai Emery said on Friday.
They suffered a surprise 3-2 home loss to Crystal Palace last weekend before a 3-1 defeat at Wolves on Wednesday to leave the Gunners fifth in the table, a point behind Chelsea (67 points) in the final Champions League qualification spot with three games left.
Emery conceded he has had to lift his squad before heading to the King Power Stadium today.
"The first target is to recover our confidence," he said at his pre-match press conference.
"We can build on this confidence each minute, each hour, each day, each week - and above all we're training and we're looking for a big performance for the three points."
Arsenal, who play Valencia in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday, have been impressive at home this season. But their away form has been poor, with only six wins in 17.
"If we think negatively with the last two matches, we can't think positively about the (away) games we won against Napoli and Watford," added Emery of the matches before their two defeats. "Each match is a new history, a new test."
After Leicester, Arsenal host Brighton before finishing the season with a trip to Burnley on May 12 as they seek to qualify for the Champions League after a two-year absence.
Arsenal top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with 19 goals, could be back today after missing the Wolves game with a sinus issue.
Emery also praised Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers, who has overseen a turnaround since his appointment in late February - 13 points from four wins, one draw and two losses.
Before his arrival, in the same number of games, they managed only one win, one draw and five defeats.
"This coach has given them a new idea, a new energy and a new style," said Emery. "He hasn't changed the players a lot but used a different system. He's doing important things in the set pieces. They feel good now with confidence."

Football: No need to buy to be jolly, insists Spurs manager Pochettino

LONDON • 'Tis the season to be jolly and Mauricio Pochettino has urged fans to be more positive and cheer on Tottenham despite their lack of summer spending, saying that he wants to change perceptions of the club.
Speaking at a pre-match conference ahead of today's Premier League match at Everton, the Spurs manager said: "If we don't sign in January, people say we are going to struggle - it's all negative.
"They don't say, 'Tottenham didn't sign anyone because they believe they have the tools to maybe challenge for the title.'
"The doubt is always negative, never positive. We need to fight with this perception and to be proud of the team."
Despite all of their rivals spending in pre-season in their bid to win the league title, Spurs did not sign a single player - the first time a Premier League club failed to do so since the inception of the transfer window in 2003.
The club are also unlikely to spend when the window opens next month owing mainly to fees being used to build their new stadium.
Pochettino added that it was a shame that people criticised the arrival of Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton last year, after the goalkeeper proved doubters wrong during the 2-0 League Cup win over Arsenal in midweek.

GLASS HALF-FULL
If we don't sign players people say we are going to struggle - it's all negative. They don't say, 'Tottenham didn't sign anyone because they believe they have the tools to maybe challenge for the title.'
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Spurs manager, hits back at the doubters who question the club's recent lack of transfer activity.

"Look at the case of when we signed Paulo Gazzaniga, people criticise, 'Oh, he signed the third keeper'," the Argentinian said.
"The perception was, 'Oh, we cannot announce the player from Southampton because it looks like we don't have ambition.'
"It's a shame, because after 11/2 years, Paulo kept a clean sheet in the derby against Arsenal for the first time at the Emirates and he was fantastic."
Despite Spurs' lack of signings, the club have enjoyed their best-ever start to a Premier League campaign and are likely title contenders.
But Pochettino agreed that the title race was developing into a two-horse race - such is the form of the two teams above them.
"(Manchester) City and Liverpool are at the top. It is normal they're the two big candidates to win the Premier League," he said.
"Today, it's impossible to say if we are going to have the chance to fight for the title. The most important thing is to have the faith that we can compete."
Still, Spurs could close the gap in the festive season. After Liverpool's win over Wolves on Friday, Tottenham trail the leaders by nine points and City, who were shocked 3-2 by Crystal Palace, by five points.
But Liverpool face a tough run of festive fixtures with Arsenal at home on Dec 29 followed by a trip to City on Jan 3. Spurs in contrast, face a relatively easier time against Bournemouth, Wolves and Cardiff before New Year's Day.
Pochettino was also asked if he was eager to win his first trophy since he was appointed in 2014, with Spurs having made it to the League Cup semi-finals.
"Closer? I think it's a long way still," said the 46-year-old, who is contracted to Tottenham till 2023.
"I think we're playing against Chelsea over two legs and of course it's going to be our fourth or fifth semi-final in 41/2 years.
"But we're so far away. There's a lot of work to do."

Xavi hangs up his boots, aspires to coach Barca

TEHERAN • Xavi Hernandez hopes to one day become the coach of Spanish champions Barcelona, the club where he spent 17 years of his 21-year senior career.
But for now, the 39-year-old, who officially hung up his boots on Monday, indicated that he will stay in Qatar to begin his coaching career.
He is likely to remain in a highly paid role with his club Al Sadd, rather than return to Spain.
"The idea is to start as a coach in Qatar, where there is less pressure, to test myself and get some experience," he told Spain's Efe agency in Teheran just hours before Al Sadd faced Iranian side Persepolis in their last group match of the AFC Champions League on Monday.
"I eventually want to return to Europe and hopefully Barcelona but I'm excited to start as a coach, although I'm not ready yet for the top level. I need to walk before I can run but obviously my ultimate goal is to end up becoming Barcelona coach.
"Football can be played in many different ways but I've always been a huge fan of Barcelona's approach.
"The way in which they control the game and keep the ball is the style I've grown up with and it is the style I'll use when I'm a coach."
Al Sadd coach Jesualdo Ferreira predicted that Xavi will become a great manager in future, adding it was beautiful to work with "one of the best players in the world".
Xavi helped Spain win the World Cup in 2010 and also four Champions League and eight LaLiga titles with Barcelona. But he ended his career on a low key when Al Sadd were beaten 2-0 by Persepolis.
Several home fans brandished banners reading "Adios Xavi" to show their appreciation of the player who with Andres Iniesta formed the backbone of one of Barcelona's greatest ever sides.
Xavi was also honoured by the Persepolis management who presented him with a jersey featuring the No. 6 he has worn in his career.

Football: Tampines Rovers stay true to playing style as they salvage 1-1 draw with Hanoi FC in AFC Cup tie

SINGAPORE - Staring at defeat and with its game plan yet to bear fruit, it would have been tempting for Tampines Rovers to just hoof the ball long and hope for a lucky break.
But the Stags stuck to their principle of playing attacking football and managed to rescue a 1-1 draw against Hanoi FC in their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup Group F game on Tuesday (March 12).
"No, this is the way we play," insisted Tampines head coach Kadir Yahaya, when asked if he considered switching to direct tactics when his team trailed 1-0 just after the hour mark.
"We have to exert our style and philosophy. We cannot go for the long ball just because we are losing, we have to maintain our shape and discipline and to keep moving the ball."
The draw, played before 1,671 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, meant that Hanoi stay top of the group with four points from two games, ahead of the Stags on goal difference.
In the other Group F match, Cambodia's Nagaworld FC beat Myanmar's Yangon United 2-1 in Phnom Penh.
Against Hanoi, Tampines built their moves with passes from the back even if it meant risking interceptions and counter-attacks from the pacy and technical Vietnamese side.
It was the visitors who struck first in the 62nd minute when goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari could not punch away an inswinging corner and the ball dropped to unmarked Senegalese striker Pape Omar Faye, who tapped home.
Undeterred, Tampines poured men forward and took full advantage of Hanoi's high defensive line in the 76th minute when winger Jordan Webb broke the offside trap, galloped clear before sliding the ball under goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cong and into the net to equalise.
The Vietnamese champions began their AFC Cup campaign in style with a 10-0 hammering of Nagaworld but found Tampines a much harder nut to crack.
But Hanoi coach Chu Dinh Nghiem absolved his team of any blame, saying: "I am happy with my players' performance, but I am just a little bit upset that we deserve the three points but didn't win.
"The main reason is the (artificial) field, which is very difficult to play on."
Tampines' next Group F fixture is away at Nagaworld on April 2.

Football: Portugal draw a blank against Ukraine on Ronaldo's return

LISBON (REUTERS) - Defending champions Portugal were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Ukraine in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier on Friday (March 22) as Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the team for the first time since the World Cup.
Ukraine's veteran goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov kept Portugal at bay with several fine saves in the first hour before the hosts ran out of ideas in the Group B game.
Portugal had an early goal chalked off when William Carvalho's header was ruled offside and defender Pepe then produced an impressive volley which the 34-year-old Pyatov did well to turn over.
Ronaldo, left out of the Nations Cup matches in the autumn by mutual consent with coach Fernando Santos, then sprang into action as he twice got free on the left.
First he cut inside his marker and produced a snapshot which Pyatov saved with his legs and shortly afterwards he opted to go outside Serhiy Kryvtsov and fired in a low, left-foot shot which the goalkeeper again stopped.
The Ukraine captain saved his best for the 56th minute when he brilliantly turned away Andre Silva's goalbound shot with a one-handed save.
With Bernardo Silva repeatedly dribbling into dead-ends, Portugal began to lose composure as both Joao Cancelo and Ronaldo sent wayward crosses straight into touch.

Portugal then had a let off when Rui Patricio blocked Yevhen Konoplyanka's shot - Ukraine's only effort on target in the match - and debutant Junior Moraes saw his shot from the rebound blocked.
A late chance went begging for Portugal when substitute Rafa Silva missed his kick after a low Ronaldo cross found him in the area.

Football: Keeping 'feel-good factor' up

LONDON • While the Old Trafford faithful are hopeful more tales can be sung about "the legend of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer" when Manchester United welcome Huddersfield in what will be his first home game tomorrow, Ashley Young is seeking to temper expectations despite their "crazy week".
The 45-year-old stand-in manager went back to basics at Cardiff on Saturday to provide an antidote to the misery of the Jose Mourinho era, as United scored five goals in an English Premier League game since Alex Ferguson's last match in May 2013.
But, while Solskjaer will field a similar attacking line-up at home to keep the "feel-good factor" going, Young has urged his teammates to "concentrate on what happens on the pitch, not off it".
He said: "We have lots of games coming up over the Christmas period and it is about recovering in the right way, and we just have to concentrate on each game coming up and not look too far ahead.
"You go out to do a job and go out and play football. That is what every single player in the squad has been doing and obviously, there has been a change of manager... A lot of the press will talk about us, but Huddersfield is our focus."
The wing-back admitted that Solskjaer's positive demeanour had been a refreshing change to the sullen manner often exhibited by Mourinho.
He joked: "I don't think he has stopped smiling. He was like that as a player, he always has a smile on his face and that can reflect down on to the team which is a good thing."
United captain Antonio Valencia also felt the mood had lifted around the club.
Despite having been left out of the match-day squad in Wales, the defender, who has made only four league appearances this term after being ostracised by Mourinho, remains convinced that under Solskjaer's watch, a top-four place is still within their grasp. The Red Devils are eight points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.
He said: "Nobody is giving up at all. You know there is half a season left to play so it's all about working hard, battling and playing well.
"We know we have got the quality within the squad to be able to do that. The main thing is to get everyone together after Christmas and it is a great fact we don't have to travel as it's at our doorstep. Playing in front of our fans is always a special occasion.
"We are getting the chance to make them happy and, hopefully, (we can) put any recent bad results behind us to get into good form again."
With the Terriers mired in the relegation zone after five league defeats on the trot, United have an opportunity to close the gap and Nemanja Matic believes they can put David Wagner's men to the sword by following Solskjaer's mantra of "more forward play".
However, pundit and ex-United player Gary Neville has urged caution as one swallow does not make a summer, insisting it was too early to make a judgment call on the Norwegian's managerial credentials.
Speaking on his own podcast, the former United defender said: "There was an immediate bounce and impact from Ole, however it was Cardiff and we need to see if they can do it over six months."

Rested and recharged, Barca are taking no chances

LONDON • Barcelona's team sheet at Celta Vigo over the weekend spoke volumes about how serious they are approaching the reverse fixture of their Champions League semi-final with Liverpool today.
Despite holding a commanding 3-0 lead, Ernesto Valverde opted to rest all 11 players who started in the Nou Camp victory.
He has every reason to be cautious, with last season's quarter-final collapse at Roma - only the second time in Champions League history a club have come back in the second leg after trailing by three goals - "a scar" burned into the club's psyche.
The Barcelona coach also knows a European night under the floodlights at Anfield is one of football's most intimidating prospects, with Liverpool having the capacity and ability to conjure up a similar fightback like the Italian side.
That was why Valverde was so disappointed to lose Ousmane Dembele with a hamstring tear against Celta.
While the France forward was not expected to start on Merseyside, the "important player" would have been a perfect option off the bench with his pace and ability to drive at tiring defenders, especially as his team are expected to play on the counter.
According to Spanish daily AS, the injury is season-ending and Valverde admitted ahead of their trip to Anfield that "it is a major blow with the big games we have coming up".
However, Valverde still has an almost full squad to choose from and, unlike Liverpool, who are locked in a tussle for the Premier League title with Manchester City, Barcelona have had the luxury to wrap players in cotton wool in domestic competition after lifting the LaLiga crown on April 27.

The Spaniard said: "We have the advantage of being champions already. Of course, we will try to use it."
Talismanic captain Lionel Messi is also under no illusions his team "are going to a very difficult stadium" even though his team will be fresher than the Reds.
However, he has pledged to bring that "beautiful cup back to Nou Camp" as he aims to guide the Catalans to their first Champions League final since 2015.
The Argentina forward, who is gunning for his fifth Champions League trophy, has 24 goals in 32 matches against English clubs - more than any other player.
Messi said: "It is a very good result, but (Liverpool have) a lot of history, and that put you under a lot of pressure. We know it's not over."

Barcelona can end Real's title hopes
MADRID • After eliminating Real Madrid from the King's Cup in midweek, Barcelona now have the opportunity to send their arch-rivals packing in the title race, too.
The Spanish champions' 3-0 semi-final, second-leg win means they will go into their LaLiga Clasico clash with a spring in their step, even though Real were the better side in the second leg.
A repeat today at the Santiago Bernabeu would leave Santiago Solari's side 12 points adrift of Barcelona, who also enjoy a superior head-to-head record.
That would be a gargantuan gap to make up with 12 games left.
Atletico Madrid are closer, seven points back, and they still have to play Barca in April, albeit at the Nou Camp, where they have not won in 18 visits.
But there is no doubt bumping Real out of the chase would be a major step for the Catalan giants and they should feel confident if recent form between the two is any guide.

  • 12

  • Points behind leaders Barcelona if Real Madrid lose the Clasico with 12 LaLiga games left.

The Cup victory was Barcelona's fourth in six games at the Bernabeu and they have scored three or more in each of those matches. Defender Gerard Pique believes his team have Real worked out as they "know how to get at them".
Ernesto Valverde's men certainly taught Solari's players a lesson in finishing on Wednesday, with Luis Suarez notching his 11th goal in all Clasico encounters.
Tipping the Uruguay striker to again make the difference up front, Valverde told Spanish daily AS: "I don't think there are many players capable of scoring three times against Madrid twice in the same season.
"When Luis Suarez is in the area, he is at 200 per cent."
On Thursday, Valencia sealed a 1-0 second-leg victory over Real Betis to book their spot in the King's Cup final against Barca on May 25.
A 2-2 first-leg draw had given Marcelino's men the edge and they put in a solid performance to reach their first major final since winning the competition in 2008.
The Valencia coach said post-game: "We have suffered a lot this season and the team deserved this reward, we have had very difficult moments.
"We deserve better than the results show. There have been many draws, a few defeats. We are always competitive."

Hazard shuts out contract talks, eyes 'nice last trophy'

LONDON • Chelsea fear it may be a parting gift, but should today's Europa League final be Eden Hazard's last game for the Premier League club, the Belgium forward is determined to go out on a high.
After seven "amazing" seasons at Stamford Bridge, he is expected to move to Real Madrid this summer after running down his contract into its final year.
While a deal has yet to be announced with his long-term suitors, Hazard has shown no interest in extending his contract beyond 2020 and has already told the club where his future lies.
However, Chelsea's position is complicated by a Fifa ban on signing players for the next two transfer windows.
Sell now and as things stand, pending an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, they will be unable to recruit a replacement.
Holding on to him for a further 12 months, though, runs the risk of a player who can leave for nothing next summer rather than for a reported £100 million ($174.5 million) fee.
Having always pledged to depart with a trophy, victory against Arsenal in Baku, Azerbaijan would provide the perfect send-off.
The 28-year-old, who also ruled out playing for another English club, said: "It is a European competition so for me, for the club, for the manager, for the fans, it is something important.
"When you play a final, it does not matter whether it is the Champions League, Europa League or League Cup - you just want to win.
"If it is my last game, I hope to bring (home) the trophy. My first trophy at Chelsea was the (2013) Europa League, so it would be a nice last trophy."
Blues manager Maurizio Sarri, who himself could be headed for pastures new, has also admitted the club "need to be ready if (Hazard) wants something different".
While Hazard, who has also won two Premier League titles, a League Cup and the FA Cup with Chelsea, suggested he would speak about his future only when an agreement has been struck, that could come soon after the Belgian said "after the final, we will see what happens".
He added: "At the moment, nothing has happened, so I can't say anything. It's in the hands of the clubs. But I can put it aside. I have done it during a full season right now and I have played reasonably well. So I stay in that mode, just thinking about football.
"If we go to Baku with a strong approach to the game, we can do something good there."
In his way of a final hurrah stand Arsenal, who like the Blues, are determined to end what has been a topsy-turvy season with silverware.
But unlike Chelsea, Unai Emery's men missed out on Champions League qualification via a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Arsenal manager knows that with a victory, his players will fulfil "two objectives - to go to the Champions League and after, to play with the titles".
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, the Spaniard said: "I want to do something important here, for example to play for this title. We deserved to be here, we feel to do something here.
"Above all is to enjoy and play with all our good spirit.
"We're playing for our supporters whether they're here or not."

Pochettino wants Spurs to be brave

LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino has challenged Tottenham to seize their unexpected chance to make history as they try to overturn a 1-0 deficit at Ajax in their Champions League semi-final today.
The manager is convinced Spurs can still reach their maiden Champions League final despite losing the first leg at home last week.
"Yes, it's possible," said a defiant Pochettino, when asked if his side could still make the final.
"It's possible if you play bravely and play with a winning mentality. That is the most important thing.
"We have ahead two finals against Ajax and Everton and it's in our hands to be in a good position at the end of the season.
"No one believed we would be in this position in the last week of the competition. We are in a position where it depends on us to be in the (Champions League) final or not, and then it depends on us to finish in the (Premier League) top four."
Tottenham go into their biggest game for decades today on a low note after conceding in added time to lose 1-0 at Bournemouth last Saturday. It was a third successive loss in all competitions as they finished with nine men after red cards for Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth.

FINAL FLOURISH
We have ahead two finals against Ajax and Everton and it's in our hands to be in a good position at the end of the season.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, urging his team to end the season on a high.

A MATCH FOR ANYONE
You saw it against Real Madrid, in the group stage against Bayern Munich that we can make it difficult for anyone. We have also shown that we can beat anyone.
DONNY VAN DE BEEK, Ajax midfielder, on his team feeling confident of their chances to reach the Champions League final.

But Spurs, who play Everton in their final Premier League game on Sunday, are all but certain to finish at least fourth and qualify for the Champions League after Arsenal and Manchester United were both held to draws last Sunday.
Pochettino said: "It's a massive week and that's why we need to move on and be ready again. But, whatever happens, I am going to feel proud."
Son will be back from his ban to inject dynamism and penetration missing from the first leg as Tottenham try to reach their first European final since the 1984 Uefa Cup.
But they will also have to focus on the challenge presented by Ajax's vibrant young side led by their 19-year-old captain Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, 21 and Donny van de Beek, 22.
Van de Beek, recalling the first leg where he gave Ajax a precious away goal, told the club website: "We played too many long balls. That is not our game and our quality.
"We have to stay focused like we have before, stay calm and play our own game.
"You saw it against Real Madrid, in the group stage against Bayern Munich that we can make it difficult for anyone. We have also shown that we can beat anyone."
While a goalless draw will be enough to take them to the final, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag wants his fully fit side to go for a win.
"We need to win this match tomorrow, that will be our mindset", ten Hag said at a pre-match press conference yesterday. "We have to stick to our own strengths."
The Dutch side initially dominated Tottenham during the first leg last week, but they struggled in the second half as Spurs put pressure on their defence.
"Our minds were a bit too much on defending the lead," ten Hag said. "But it was also a show of strength by Spurs.
"It showed we have to cross another frontier tomorrow. But we are confident we can do it. We are fit and we are eager."

Football: Klopp hails 'best night' of his life after ending final hex

MADRID (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp revelled in the biggest night of his managerial career on Saturday (June 1) after winning Liverpool's sixth Champions League title, ending a run of six straight losses in finals.
Klopp had lost his two previous Champions League finals, against Bayern Munich as Borussia Dortmund boss in 2013 and last year against Real Madrid, the 2016 Europa League final and three domestic cup finals in Germany and England.
"I'm so happy for the boys, I'm so happy for my family, they suffer every year when we go to a final... they deserve it more than anybody," Klopp said to BT Sport.
"It's maybe the best night of my life."
Liverpool clinched their first European trophy since 2005 after a poor contest with fellow Premier League outfit Spurs, and Klopp hailed his side's guts to win the title despite obvious tiredness.
"Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank any more?" a jubilant Klopp added.
"This is great for our development because it's always like we'd be doing good steps but people say 'so what you didn't win anything'."

Managers in Germany are usually doused in beer after winning a trophy but when asked about that tradition, Klopp laughed: "Usually 20 minutes after the game I'm already half pissed, and here I didn't even get a water!"

Football: Christian Pulisic is most expensive American player in history after $100m move to Chelsea

LONDON (THE GUARDIAN, AFP) - Chelsea made the first major statement of intent in the January transfer window by signing United States forward Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of £58 million (S$100.3 million) on Wednesday (Jan 3).
The 20-year-old becomes the most expensive American player in history and will be loaned back to the German Bundesliga leaders until the end of the season.
Pulisic, who moved to Germany as a teenager and has played more than 80 times for Dortmund, has featured more in the Champions League this season than the domestic league as coach Lucien Favre favours English winger Jadon Sancho in his line-up.
He admitted in November last year that he hoped to play in the English Premier League, having refused to extend his existing contract expiring in June 2020.
Pulisic said in a statement issued by Chelsea: "It's a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club and I look forward to working hard towards being a contributor to their team of world-class players."
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said: "It was always Christian's dream to play in the Premier League. That certainly has to do with his American background and, as a result, we were unable to extend his contract.
"Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity.

"Christian Pulisic is a character- perfect player. I am sure that in the coming months, he will do everything in his power to bring his high quality to the team and to achieve his sporting goals with his teammates at Borussia Dortmund."
A former Under-17 captain, Pulisic became the youngest player to captain the US senior side aged 20 years and 63 days in November last year.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia stated her delight to have signed "one of Europe's most sought-after young players... who has the potential to become an important Chelsea player for many years to come".

Football: Hat-trick hero Bale fires Real Madrid into Club World Cup final

MADRID (AFP) - Gareth Bale hit an 11-minute hat-trick on Wednesday (Dec 19) as Real Madrid strolled into the Club World Cup final by beating Kashima Antlers 3-1 in Abu Dhabi.
Bale scored in the 44th, 53rd and 55th minutes at the Zayed Sports City Stadium to put Madrid within touching distance of a record fourth success in this competition, and their third triumph in a row.
Real are currently tied with their La Liga rivals Barcelona, having each won it three times before, but it would be a major surprise if the European champions were not hoisting the trophy again on Saturday, when they face hosts Al Ain in the final.
Bale had missed the 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano last weekend with an ankle problem but he was in irresistible form, albeit against limited opposition.
The Welshman joins Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only player to score in three separate Club World Cup tournaments while his treble, coming either side of half-time, is the fastest in the history of the competition.
"Bale ate everything today, the floodlights, the stands, the nets," coach Santiago Solari said. "He has shown what a player he is and what he can do. So let him rest and eat the nets again on Saturday."
Kashima Antlers, from Japan's J1 League, qualified after winning the Asian Champions League last month but, despite a lively start and a late consolation from Shoma Doi, they were clearly second best.
Bale now has 10 goals in 21 games for Real Madrid this season while victory will also come as a relief to Solari.
A handful of underwhelming performances had been badly timed given the sacking of Jose Mourinho by Manchester United, with speculation linking the Portuguese with a return to the club never far away.
"We see the final as a reward for this team that has been together a long time and given great joy to Madrid fans," Solari said.
Madrid were still sleeping during the opening 10 minutes and Antlers should have led, as Serginho's shot was tipped wide by Thibaut Courtois before Gen Shoji failed to connect with a free header three yards out.

REAL FIND THEIR GROOVE

They soon found their rhythm, however, with Karim Benzema twice shooting straight at the goalkeeper while Bale had an effort blocked after nipping between the Antlers central defenders.
Madrid's front two were tying Antlers in knots and two minutes before half-time, Bale struck. A neat one-two with Marcelo on the edge of the area set him in behind and Bale guided the bouncing ball into the far corner.
Benzema had a shot cleared off the line at the start of the second half but Madrid did not have long to wait.
Bale scored twice in as many minutes as first, he capitalised on a poor backpass from Shuto Yamamoto and then drove into the far corner after Marcelo had, again, teed him up.
Three clear, Madrid were home and dry, and Bale departed on the hour, replaced by Marco Asensio while Casemiro, recovered from an ankle injury, came on to make his first appearance since Nov 12.
Antlers pulled one goal back with 13 minutes left as Doi drove in after Yasushi Endo headed down. Initially ruled offside, VAR showed Endo was level but a comeback never looked likely.
